Lydia Schaefer, 81, of San Diego, California, left us peacefully on July 18th at a Board & Care facility in Mira Mesa, surrounded by caring hands, love, and prayers. A beloved mother and grandmother, Lydia or "Lyd" will always be remembered for her loving nature and giving spirit to those who knew her.
Born on March 13th, 1944, in Manila, Philippines as the eldest of four (4) children to George William and Buenconcejo Schaefer, survived by her siblings - Richard, Erlinda, and William, and half-sister, Virginia. Moreover, Lydia is survived by her children Gail (Michiko), Paul (Andrea), and Randy (Vy) as well as her grandchildren Noah (17), Jacob (10), and Camille (2).
At an early age, Lydia would attend daily mass with her grandmother, strengthening her faith and devotion. She had considered a path to becoming a nun, but transitioned to a life working in healthcare. Graduating from Far Eastern University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she started her Nursing career at the Lourdes Hospital in Mandaluyong, Metro Manila. Mom Lyd / Lola immigrated to the United States in 1968, first settling in New Jersey, then to California (Los Angeles and finally, San Diego)
Raising three (3) sons and working tirelessly, Lydia worked at several hospitals in San Diego, as well as advancing to Director of Nursing at several convalescent homes in the area. She retired in 2008 as a Charge Nurse at the George Bailey Detention Facility.
Lydia enjoyed shopping, karaoke, crocheting, and baking. Spending time with her grandkids (whom she loved and adored immensely) was the highlight of her days.
