Saber Springs senior care facility. Mary was born in Greenville, Texas to Phil and Eva Chappell
on June 1, 1924. Her mother died from complications of birth and Mary was entrusted to a
cherished Aunt and Uncle to be raised. Following graduation from high school, Mary attended
one year at East Texas College before marrying and settling down to raise three children. That
marriage did not succeed and she subsequently married Al Clayton, a career Navy man, and
they moved to San Diego, CA in 1955. Mary's focus her whole life was on her faith and her
family. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of San Diego for over
50 years. Mary is preceded in death by her loving parents who raised her, three brothers, and
her adoring husband. Mary was a lover of sports and all things Texas. She never lost her Texas
accent. She will be remembered for her strong sense of family, her kindness, sense of humor,
warmth, and the way she always made guests feel welcome in her home. Mary will be interred
at El Camino Memorial Park. There will be a family only memorial service.
