Mervin “John” Albert Saathoff, age 97, of San Diego, California passed away on Thursday December 13, 2018. Mervin was born November 30, 1921 in Menlo, Kansas to Ida Saathoff and Albert A. Saathoff and was married to Judith Saathoff for 73 years.
John service his country in the United States Navy from January 17, 1944 to June 30, 1964 when he retired Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. While in the Navy he served in Corpus Christy, Texas, on the U.S.S. Coral Sea in the Mediterranean, Japan, Midway Island, South Pacific, Pensacola, Florida, San Diego Naval Air Station, North Fork, Virginia, Moffat Field, California, New York Floyd Bennett Field, and his final service was done at San Diego, North Island.
After he retired from the Navy, he found his passion for real estate and opened his firm, Wilson-Saathoff Realtors. He worked in real estate until his health declined in his 90's.
John is survived by his wife, Judith Saathoff; son Ron Saathoff, 2 granddaughters Ashley Granja and Haylee Saathoff, and 2 great granddaughters Hanna Granja and Mia Granja.
John was preceded in death by; father Albert A. Saathoff and mother Ida Saathoff, 2 sisters Madelyn and Myrna, and 3 brothers Wendell, Vern and Wayne.
A visitation for John will be held Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home, 1818 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107. A graveside service will occur Friday, January 4, 2019 from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122.
