Phil was born and raised in New York, spending his formative years in Jackson Heights (borough of Queens). He attended Trinity School and then went on to attend Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity and graduated with a Finance degree. Later, he was accepted to Columbia University back in New York, where he earned his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA).
After earning his MBA, his amazing journey continued. He met the love of his life Lucinda (Cyndee) and they wed in 1963. The newlywed couple then started their life together with an overseas adventure. Phil’s business career took him to four countries in South America – Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Brazil, with each of their four children being born in one of the countries. The Nerhood family returned to the United States in 1976, settling in San Diego California.
Phil was an avid sports fan - particularly baseball - and was a renowned Padres lover. He played golf and tennis throughout most of his adult life, gaining many life - long friends along the way. Later, as his mobility slowed down, he cultivated his love of bridge, belonging to a bridge club and playing whenever the opportunity presented itself. Oh, and let’s not forget body surfing. He always proclaimed himself to be the best there was having honed his skills on his many road trips to Jones Beach in New York as a youngster.
What truly stood out most about Phil was his warmth and generosity with people. Always willing to help others, he was a beacon of support not only to his family, but anyone who needed a little pick me up. Phil always carried himself with dignity, with his positive demeanor radiating through his beautiful smile.
Phil is survived by his children – David (Melitta), Sharon Martin (Darryl), Christina King (Dan), and Eric (Jackie). He also has eight grandchildren: Weston, Gabriela, Justin, Jillian, Sophia, William, Cooper, and Madeline. He is also survived by two nephews and various cousins.
