May 4, 1956 - May 14, 2023
Randall Beery (Randy) was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on May 4, 1956, to William E. and Ruth (DeLancey) Beery. As a youth, he was involved in Boy Scouts, becoming an Eagle Scout in 1972.
After his high school graduation, Randy attended Mankato State University then joined the U.S. Navy in 1978. He served as a parachute rigger on aircraft carrier U.S.S. KittyHawk, and that job led to an avid interest in skydiving. When he left the Navy, he remained in California to ply his trade at the Perris, California, airfield, as well as skydive every chance he could. He completed over 2000 jumps in his lifetime, including a base jump from El Capitan, in Yosemite National Park, and multiple group skydiving formations.
Randy was married to Karen Emert on April 24, 1994, in San Diego, California. Son Colton and daughter Annalisa were born in 1995 and 1998, respectively. Randy was intensely involved with the Boy Scouts of America with Colton's troop. He served as an assistant scoutmaster, leading multiple hikes and adventures, as well as strongly encouraging and helping Colton and other troop members to earn their Eagle Scout rank. Later, Colton and Annalisa joined a venture crew troop.
Randy was very knowledgeable in the construction industry, especially watertight sealing, and then moved on to construction forensics and construction management. He was employed with the Bergeman Group based in Honolulu, which expanded to the West Coast, where he oversaw many reconstruction projects.
Randy had a very good sense of humor, always had a story to tell, and made friends easily. He had amazing adventures and lifelong friends. He also loved to ski and went to every opening Padres ballgame since 1996. He went to all of Annalisa's field hockey games, gave great advice and was always there for his family and friends and would also go out of his way to support them and spend time with them. He lived his dash, like the poem "The Dash" says: "What matters is how we live and love, and how we spend our dash."
Randy is survived by his wife, Karen, son Colton, and daughter Annalisa. Also surviving are sister Marilyn (Tedd) Devick, brother Richard, sisters-in-law Sharon Emert and Pam (Mark) Rauber, many nieces and nephews and very close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law.
He will be greatly missed by family, coworkers and many lifelong friends.
A memorial service is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Imperial Council, in San Diego and the American Cancer Society.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.sorrentovalleychapel.com for the Beery family.
