

Raymond David Gay of San Diego, California passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the age of 91. Ray was born on June 29, 1934, in El Paso, Texas. As the son of an Army soldier, he lived in many different places growing up, including in Japan during his high school years. Ray initially attended college at the University of Denver but ultimately graduated from the University of Texas.
Ray proudly served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1979, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (Lt. Col.). His military career took him to various parts of the world, including tours in Germany and Panama as well as two war time deployments to Vietnam, where he earned numerous commendations for his bravery and leadership. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and he was a source of inspiration to all who knew him. Following his distinguished military service, Ray continued his career as a small business owner in Austin, Texas. After retiring in 2010, Ray and his wife Barbara relocated to San Diego, California, to be closer to their family especially their grandchildren.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Barbara; his son David (Astrid); his grandchildren, Marcus, Sonja (Sean) and Chiara. Ray was preceded in death by his son Steven and his brother Robert.
Ray was laid to rest in the presence of his loving family on Monday, September 29, 2025, following a beautiful memorial service that included Full Military Honors. Ray’s legacy of kindness, character, love, and dedication will forever be cherished by his family and friends.
