Dick Derenthal (December 21, 1924 – October 30, 2019) joins his wife, Sally (Quinn) Derenthal (October 19, 1926 – October 20, 2011) in rest. He is survived by his children, Ann Jennings (Norm), Paul (Margaret), Sue, Mark, Carleen (Earl), Karen (Peter) and Tim (Deana), nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and his brother Bob (Kathy).
Dick was born to Joseph and Mary (Hosch) Derenthal in St. Paul, Minnesota. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in San Diego for a time. He earned a BS in mathematics (College of St. Thomas), and an MS in physics (University of Notre Dame).
Dick and Sally married and moved to San Diego. Dick was an engineer at the Naval Electronics Laboratory and then for the rest of his career with Cubic Corporation. Dick and Sally raised their growing family in Ocean Beach, Allied Gardens and La Mesa.
Dick’s career took him from Kodiak Island to the Mississippi and the Everglades, from Egypt and Nigeria to Spain and the Netherlands. His expertise led to a stint at San Diego State tutoring graduate physics students in an area not covered by their regular faculty.
Dick’s family were members of Our Lady of Grace parish in El Cajon, where all their children attended the parish school through the eighth grade. Dick served on the parish council, taught CCD and served as an extraordinary minister. He coached baseball teams, helped build and maintain playing fields, volunteered in parish and school activities and served on the Board at Saint Augustine H.S.
Dick was a lifelong sports fan, rooting for all the local teams, but most of all for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Dick and Sally played bridge with their regular couples group, in parish bridge marathons and on casual Saturday evenings with friends. Later in life they took up golf and enjoyed touring the California wine country.
We wish to give special thanks to Dr. Lakshmi Prathipati and for the wonderful care and attention she gave our Dad and Mom.
