Roberta was born in Ames, Iowa, and grew up in Sioux City. She graduated cum laude from Augustana College (Sioux Falls, SD) and worked in the Twin Cities area before moving to Texas and attending law school at The University of Texas at Austin. She served on the editorial board of the UT Law Review and graduated with honors. Roberta began her law practice in Corpus Christi and ultimately served as a partner in the Austin offices of Bracewell & Giuliani.
Roberta enjoyed her work as well as her many interests: traveling, running, sailing, windsurfing,
cats, good food, good music, good wine, good friends, and any combination of the above. She volunteered for the Austin Animal Center and contributed to several charitable causes.
She is survived by her sister Rachel (Mike Caparelli), brothers Jeff Hegland (Heather), and Paul Hegland (Christa); seven nieces and nephews; and scores of very dear friends and relatives. A celebration of her life will be held later this fall.
Donations to the following endeavors would enrich and sustain Roberta’s legacy: Austin Animal Center, 7201 Levander Loop, Austin, TX 78702 and KUT Public Radio, PO Box 7600, Austin, TX 78713.
Etched on a memorial stone at the San Diego Hospice is a quotation by Dr Seuss:
“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Those who loved Roberta will forever smile in her memory.
