A native San Diegan, Russell lived a full life dedicated to his family, work and acts of service. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he worked for more than 40 years as the Chief Nuclear Medicine Technologist at the VA Medical Center, serving veterans and their families with the very best care. His work ethic and commitment to helping others was unparalleled. At home he loved gardening, country music, traveling (Ireland was his favorite), but most of all spending time with his family.
Russell is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carla, daughters Anna Garretson (Chris) and Colleen Cain (Darren), and grandchildren Oliver (10), Aiden (7) and Emily (4). The family is grateful for the dedication and support of ActivCare 4S Ranch that provided full-time memory care until Russell's final days.
Russell's life will be celebrated by family and close friends with a funeral Mass later this month. He is already deeply missed.
A graveside service for Russell will be held Friday, July 18, 2025 from 11:15 AM to 11:45 AM at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr, San Diego, CA 92122.
