Sai was a graduate of Matteo Ricci Secondary School of Macau, and showed early interest in math and science. After finishing high school, he followed his family to Hong Kong, and prepared for college. He came to the US in 1982. Sai supported himself with multiple part-time jobs, and graduated BSEE with honors in 1985, and MSEE in 1988 from the University of Houston, Texas. He continued at the University of Colorado, and was granted his doctorate in 1994.
Sai’s career rode the upward surge of personal mobile communication. Upon graduation, he moved to San Diego to work for Sony Electronics specializing in radio frequency (RF) discrete designs for CDMA and AMPS mobile phones. In 1998, Sai moved to a startup later known as NeoPoint to develop phones with large displays and smart phone features. At NeoPoint, he helped to build up the hardware team and worked his way up to lead the RF design team. In 2001, Sai joined the Qualcomm platform design group but his strong analytical/math background quickly led him to new challenges in the RF Systems Team. Over the past 15+ years, Sai has made huge contributions to Qualcomm and the world beyond with his work in radio/systems design for multi-mode communication, simultaneous voice and data transmission, coexistence interference prevention, and methods of power reduction in a transceiver, just to name a few. He is credited on nearly 40 patents worldwide with many more IDFs/applications in process.
Sai was a loving husband and a great father. With his busy career and family, he kept his passion in solving math problems, playing ping pong, building models, fresh-water tropical fish, pet rabbits, hiking, and bicycling, and he is also an avid long distance runner. Sai loved to share his hobbies and activities. Being gentle and modest, he was a caring friend to many and a nurturing mentor at his work places. He was always grateful to and remembered all who had helped him. Sai has touched the lives of many, and left beautiful memories to us all.
He is survived by his wife Shermen, son Seth, and daughter Samantha, five siblings: Wun Fan Chow (Kwok Ping), Fong Fan Kwan, Wai Fan (Xiao Ling), Infan Cheong (Hoichi) and Iu Fan (Yu Hsian), three half siblings: Chi Chong (Siu King), Yee Chong (Shuen Ying), and Bing Chong (Jin Lian), eleven nephews and nieces, and one grandnephew and two grandnieces.
Visitation will start at noon on February 10th, 2018 and memorial service at 1:00 PM, and celebration of Sai’s remarkable life will continue afterward in a reception area at:
El Camino Memorial, Sorrento Valley Chapel, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA 92121
