Sharon Lynn Andrews passed away peacefully Nov 4, 2021, while surrounded by loved ones. She was a deeply loved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and will be profoundly missed by her extended family and her many close friends.
Sharon was born on July 8, 1932, and was raised in the south Detroit suburb of Wyandotte, Michigan. She was the eldest of five children born to Emily and George Leathers, including George, Jr., Shelia, David, and Greg. She attended Catholic elementary, middle, and high schools in Wyandotte, where, as a young girl, she enjoyed ice skating during the cold Michigan winters and playing organ for the church choir on Sundays. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1954, earing a B.A. in English Literature as well as a Teaching Credential.
Upon graduating, she along with a few close college girlfriends, jumped at the chance to venture West when recruited by the state of California to fill vacant teaching positions for its burgeoning post-WWII population. While in San Diego, she met Ohioan Lawrence F. Andrews, DDS, then serving as a navy dentist, at an officer's dance at the Admiral Kidd Club near the Naval Training Center in Point Loma. When Larry completed his two years of service, he returned to Ohio to pursue specialty training in orthodontics. Sharon moved back to Wyandotte to resume teaching middle school English and to continue her courtship with Larry. They married in 1958 in Detroit, Michigan, and promptly returned to beautiful San Diego to begin their new life. She remained married to the love of her life for 63 years until her recent passing. Sharon and Larry had four children in four years from 1959 to 1963; Beth (attorney) Lynn (pediatrician), Larry (financial planner), and Will (orthodontist) and raised them all in La Jolla, CA. They were blessed with six grandchildren; Larry, III, Kathryn, Claire, Caroline (Parker), Andrew (Parker), and Myla, all of whom greatly admired and adored their grandma.
Sharon had deep American roots. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and counted relatives who fought in the American Revolutionary War, The Civil War, World War I, and World War II. She loved to travel (especially to Hawaii), classic literature, crossword puzzles, Masterpiece Theater and had a well-known soft spot for chocolate chip cookies. She was a stickler for proper language usage and an advocate of good manners (insisting to the amusement of her grandchildren that French fries ought to be eaten with a fork). She cherished her time as president of the Happy Hackers at La Jolla Country Club and looked forward to playing bridge with her friends there. She was active in several community service organizations, including the National Charity League.
Sharon will be fondly remembered for her kindness, elegance, wit, intelligence, no-nonsense demeanor, and devotion to her children and grandchildren. She embodied sophistication tempered by down-to-earth Midwestern sensibilities. She lived a full life and immeasurably enriched the lives of those around her. She will be so dearly missed by all those close to her.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 16th at St. Brigid Parish Catholic Church located at 4735 Cass St. in Pacific Beach.
