A native San Diegan, Stephen grew up surfing, water sports, fishing and diving the local waters with his cherished cousins and friends. He graduated from Point Loma High School, and attended Hofstra University in New York, San Diego City College and UCSD while pursuing his passion for precision tooling and marine mechanics. His interests led him to study high end boat restoration and mechanical engineering under the mentorship of such highly regarded experts as Joel Foley, Ed Taylor, Sr. and Kent Adams.
Stephen made a 38 year career locally in the boating community as the proprietor of SMS Yacht Maintenance, garnering a professional reputation for his precision design and repairs, attention to detail and fine finish restorations.
Among his many interests, Stephen enjoyed hunting, riding dirt bikes, cooking and grilling for a wide network of friends, competitive marksmanship and raising Labrador retrievers. He was certified for scuba at a young age, and became qualified as a 100 ton Master Ocean Operator.
Stephen was the son of Anne Stephens Vafis, and Dr. George Vafis of Point Loma, and grandson of William T. (Tom) and Gwen Stephens, all of whom were prominent San Diegans. He is survived by Denise M.
