Sy passed away peacefully on April 1, 2010 in San Diego, California following a lengthy illness. Sy was born and raised in Mechanicville and moved to San Diego in 2007 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. A graduate of Mechanicville High School, Sy served in the army during World War II. He worked for many years as a foreman at the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, and then joined the General Electric Company before retiring in 1987. Sy was a member of the Sons of Italy and Past President of the Mechanicville High School Booster Club. He was an active congregant of the Church of the Assumption-St Paul.
In retirement, Sy devoted many hours to his bountiful vegetable garden. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family and going for drives with his wife, Jennie. After moving to San Diego, he loved walking in the California sun, being with family, and seeing the many new friends he made there. Sy and Jennie joined a beautiful parish, the Mission San Diego de Alacala and attended mass regularly. He still rooted for his favorite New York teams, the Yankees and the Giants, and followed them closely.
Sy was a happy man who loved life and possessed the secret of contentment. He was drawn to the simple things: warm sunshine, good food, music, family, and friends. He sang beautifully, and to the end of his days, there was always a smile on his face and a song in his heart.
Sy was devoted to his family, and was a wonderful husband and father. He is survived by Jennie, his wife of 62 years, his sons, Robert and Arthur, 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, his sister, Anna Fascia, and his brother, Carmine Fusco. His family was blessed to have had him in our lives for such a long time.
A beautiful memorial mass was held at the Mission San Diego de Alcala on April 6. Sy will be buried in the Rosecrans National Cemetery overlooking the city of San Diego and the Pacific Ocean. For his family and friends back home, a memorial mass is planned for Sy on Saturday, April 17 at 10:00 AM, at the Church of Assumption-St. Paul, 52 William Street, Mechanicville, N.Y. 12118. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to made to the Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala, 10818 San Diego Mission Road, San Diego, CA 92108-2429.
