Tom was a native California, born and raised in Los Angeles. After graduating from USC in business, his first job was with Robinson’s Department Stores as an executive in their home furnishing division. In 1968, he was recruited by the Dayton Company in Minneapolis. It was there he met his wife, Marsha. They were married in 1971.
Nettle Creek Industries was expanding their retail shops and offered him a chance to be part of their expansion. In 1973, they both resigned their positions at Dayton’s and moved to San Diego. Together they opened their first shop in Grossmont Center. Later they expanded to the La Jolla and Fashion Valley shopping centers. The stores quickly evolved into design oriented, with a vast inventory of furniture, accessories, lamps, and art work.
Tom’s passion, shared by his wife, was traveling. They traveled the world and met many friends along the way.
Tom is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marsha, brother-in-law Ricks Mattson, nephew Tyler Mattson (Maesi), and family John Cowger (Kelly).
The graveside service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020, at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA.
