Valentin Barican Sunico

Valentin Barican Sunico, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the age of 75. He was surrounded by the comfort of his loved ones.

Valentin is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Elizabeth; his three children, Eric (and Margie Mendaros), Emil, and Edwin; and his three grandchildren, Dylan, Hailey, and Aiden. He also leaves behind his devoted sisters, Tessie, Linda, and Josie, and his brother, Roger.

Born on March 16, 1949, in Manila, Philippines, to Dr. Irineo D. Sunico and Felisa Sunico, Valentin emigrated to the United States in 1963 at the age of 14. After attending college in New Jersey for two years, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Choosing to enlist in the U.S. Navy instead, he served with distinction as a Boiler Technician, eventually achieving the rank of E7 Chief Petty Officer. Valentin’s naval career included tours aboard the USS Kitty Hawk and USS Hoel, and he proudly retired from the U.S. Navy in May 1991.

Following his military service, Valentin pursued further education and graduated from the School of Nursing at San Diego City College in 1993. He went on to work for the Department of Corrections as a Medical Technical Assistant (MTA) and later as a Correctional Officer, retiring after 16 years of dedicated service.

In retirement, Valentin found joy in tending his garden with Elizabeth, cultivating fruits and vegetables, and caring for his koi fish and pond. He cherished the time spent with his family and grandchildren, creating lasting memories.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at El Camino Memorial Park and Mortuary, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego, CA 92121. Military Funeral Honors will be conducted at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr., San Diego, CA 92122, on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 1:15 PM.

Valentin’s warmth, dedication, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
