I am Bill Lytell, and Vern's friend since August 1968. Vern and I had so much common ground. We were born just two days apart in November 1950. We were both raised by parents from north of Virginia, and Roman Catholic.  We arrived at Virginia Tech as two out of state students.  We were both skinny guys, that smoked. In the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, we went through the "Rat" System that was grueling on Freshman. We had a class inside our Company F ( We referred to it as F Troop) of 19.  Within months, our class sorted itself out, and a smaller group of us became friends for life.  We had to work at it to preserve our bonds, as distance was an on & off issue going through life. Our group consisted of Vern, Bob, Morgan, Ron, Wayne, Gene, Steve, Dex, Roger, and myself.  Because of our love of golf, Vern, Bob, Morgan, and I also shared family vacations for many years. We also did guys-only golf trips. We did couples & guys-only Virginia Tech Bowl trips.  There were picnics, tailgates, boat outings, parties, weddings, and so much more. Our group's lives were intertwined like few others. Because of our fairly close proximity, Vern & I had many a dinner together.  Frequently joining in at the summer get togethers in Baltimore. Vern & I made a great team in horse shoes and corn hole. We both lost our Fathers to emphysema. We both lost 25 year marriages.  We both turned caregivers to women we loved, and wound up losing in death.   We were exchanging Texts in the afternoon of February 9th.  He was telling me how busy he was that day.  My last response to him went unanswered, and just a few hours later,  I shockingly learned he had passed away. Vern was a wild and crazy guy in our younger years. He was an attentive Father.  He had a great sense of humor, that was blunt & sarcastic , but always there. He was part of that very small handful of people that I have cared about deeply.  Rest in Peace my Friend.

Estaremos siempre contigo, en nuestro corazón, en nuestra mente, recordando las bellas acciones que nos mostrabas cuando te visitamos a tu casa. Gracias por todo Mr. Vernon. Que esté en la Gloria y Cuida de Tus Hijos y Familiares que te extrañaremos siempre.

Loved playing  gold with my best buddy and his father!!! Love u Mr. Vern always will remember  the times we spent together. 

We met Vern through church and connected immediately.  For the last 7 years, Vern has honored our family with his presence during holidays, graduations and celebrations.  We enjoyed discussing current events, playing games, Corn Hull and shared a passion for food.  Something Vern often shared with our family is his love for God, his wife, his children and grandchildren.  

You will forever live in our hearts Vern.  We love you.

Over 53 years of memories with Vern. Met in August 1968 before we started college at Va Tech. He along with my other college buddies  and sometimes their wife’s and/or girlfriends would come to my parent’s homes in Pocomoke and Salisbury to go to the beach or go waterskiing. Vern and I were in each other’s weddings, celebrated the birth of our children and Grandchildren. went on family vacations to Emerald Isle each year and attended Tech Football games in Blacksburg and across the country together. We had fun playing golf and he even helped me with my golf business at the “U.S. Open” in Maryland one year. Vern and his family have been a wonderful part of Pam and my family’s life and we will miss him forever. I loved him, Morgan
