Remembrance
Vicky was born in San Francisco to Leslie and Rose McCabe on December 10, 1920. At an early age she moved with her family to San Diego where the McCabes settled in Mission Hills; there she attended school and was a parishioner at St. Vincent De Paul Parish. She graduated from Our Lady of Peace Academy and attended Mount Saint Mary’s College in Los Angeles where she graduated with a degree in Art History. During college Vicky was a volunteer driver for the Red Cross. After college, she met a young Aeronautical Engineer who designed airplanes for Consolidated Vultee (Convair) in San Diego. Frank and Vicky were married by Bishop Buddy in the chapel of his home in 1946 and settled into an apartment in Mission Beach. After the birth of twin daughters, they built a new home in Loma Portal, which would ultimately be added on to three times as their family grew with four more children. Vicky lived in this home for over 70 years. After Frank’s sudden passing in 1961, Vicky was faced with the daunting task of raising six children (Cathy, Judy, Frank, Cindy, Vicky and Bobby) by herself. Her mother, brother Clancy, Frank’s parents and sisters from the New Orleans area, as well as numerous other family members, neighbors and friends, all generously provided help and support. These people who were an integral part of Vicky’s life over the past 60 years will never be forgotten. Once her children were older, Vicky took on numerous jobs to stay engaged and to help support her family. One of those jobs for several years was the secretary at her parish, Saint Charles. Vicky (Mimi) also helped care for her grandchildren when they were younger, and in later years enjoyed trips to Washington DC, Ohio, and other parts of the country to visit with family and friends. One memorable trip was a Thanksgiving spent in Baton Rouge with a large contingent of Frank’s family where she also celebrated her 90th birthday. As Vicky got older staying in her home became more of a challenge, however she thrived on staying engaged with drives around the city, caregiver assisted walks around the block, visits from neighbors and friends, and she loved watching the Chargers play. Her recent milestone birthdays were a source or enjoyment and support. Vicky’s passing has been difficult, and she will be sorely missed! However, we take great comfort in knowing that she is once again united after a 60 year absence with Frank, whom she dearly loved.
