Ms. Clara Luz Munoz

Clara was born on January 4, 1929, to José Julio Valdivia and Adela Nieves Thompson in Cerro de Pasco, a mining town located at over 14,000 feet elevation in the Andes mountains of Perú. Clara’s family eventually moved to Lima, the capital of Perú, so she and her siblings could attend high school.

In 1944, when she was 15 years old, she met Luis Alberto Muñoz when he was stationed at the Naval Academy in La Punta, Perú. They married in 1949 and moved to Chosica, living next door to Alberto’s mother, Zoila Muñoz. They had three children while living in Chosica, Ricardo, Eduardo, and Martha.

In 1961, the family immigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco, where they had a fourth child, Francisco.

Clara worked as a preschool assistant teacher in the Mission District in San Francisco from the late 1970’s to 2012, retiring when she was 83 years old. For the first several years, she worked with Rickie Kitagawa, who was the teacher at the time. She really enjoyed working with Rickie and they became good friends. While walking on Mission Street, Clara was often affectionately greeted by the children she had worked with or their families.

After retiring, she became an active member of the On Lok 30th Street Senior Center community. She often volunteered at the Hospitality Center, gave tours of the center to interested people, participated in the Coro de la 30 (30th Street Choir) and the Always Active exercise class, enjoyed going on field trips to nearby casinos, and was a volunteer Spanish instructor for the Spanish language classes. She loved coming to the Senior Center and made many friends with other members and the staff of the center.

Clara was predeceased by her husband, Luis Alberto, who passed away in 2007. She is survived by her four children, six grandchildren, and two great granddaughters.

Services will be held at Mission Dolores Church at 16th Street and Dolores Street in San Francisco on January 4th at 11:00. Clara would have turned 94 years old on that date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the On Lok Senior Center. The Senior Center was an important and nourishing part of Clara’s life.
