Young Mee Gum or as we all affectionately call Aunty Daisy was born September 16, 1916 to my grandmother Lee Shee Leong and grandfather Young Lay Sam in Stockton, California. My mom was the second of five siblings. Younger sister to Uncle Jack and older sister to Aunty May, Uncle Bob, Aunty Bernice and Uncle Johnny. In 1923, the family moved to San Francisco.
At the age of 19, my dad, Tse Shut Chi was sent by my grandfather from Hong Kong to run the family bushiness, Ti Hang Lung & Co. at 846 Grant Ave. Just up the street was a very popular bakery and coffee shop called Fong Fong where mom worked. It was here my dad met mom. On November 11, 1943, my parents got married in Reno, Nevada. Three years later to the day, my older brother Neil was born in 1946. Subsequently, I was born thirteen months later on December 17th, 1947.
In the mid 1940's, dad bought our one and only home at 1237 Jackson Street. Here my parents resided until their passing. My parents were married for 58 years. Dad made sure my mom was well taken care of and thus she was fortunate to spend 67 years in our home.
My father came from a traditional old Chinese upbringing and my mom was very Western. It got a little confusing at times as I did not know which one to listen to. Regardless, I always seem to get yelled at by one of them.
After my brother and I were old enough, mom went back to work. Since Dad never took us on vacation, mom made it a point to save her money and take Neil and I on our very first vacation. We went to Disneyland, every kid's dream. She also gave us a weekly allowance which we never had before.
On a lighter note, my mom was not the best cook in the world. Once she made me lemon chicken and she just as well had given me a lemon to eat. She forgot the sugar. I would always tease her that she made the best TV dinners.
Mom was a beautiful dresser and had a wonderful talent for sewing her own clothes. Of course my bedroom was her sewing room and my closet had mostly her clothes.
Mom was the one and only one who finally brought the Tse and Young family together. After my dad passed away, she spent the next 10 years throwing some of the best parties. She did it with class and we were all very fortunate to experience some of the finest restaurants and hotels in the city. We are all going to look back and say " Those were the good old days". Mom said that what made her so happy was seeing everyone enjoying themselves and having a good time. She really did not ask for anything else in return.
Mom will leave a legacy of being so kind and generous to all her friends and family. She had such a wonderful smile and love to make people laugh. These are definitely two traits that I was fortunate to learn from mom.
Mom is in a better place now as she joins her brothers and sister. If I may borrow a quote from my cousin Carlene, her mom, aunty May has been waiting for mom for 15 years and "they are probably up to no good already".
I love you mom. Thank you for all you have done for me. May you rest in peace. I will miss you.
I would like to especially thank my cousin Lawrence and Mabel for all their help and always being there for mom.
