George was born in Snoqualamie Washington, and spent his youth in Bremerton. He attended St. Martin's in Olympia and graduated in 1955. He moved his family to southern California in the late sixties. The Werners later settled in the Bay Area, first in Cupertino, then in Redwood Estates. He moved to San Francisco in 2013.
George loved the outdoors, especially the ocean. He was a champion motorcycle and offshore boat racer, and after a successful career in the automotive machine tool business, served as mayor of Redwood Estates. He converted his race boat for charter use, and for several years during the '90s his lightning-fast red, white and blue Scarab "Made in the USA" was for hire at Pier 39, and was a familiar sight on the bay as he thrilled (and sometimes frightened) his happy passengers.
George is survived by his wife Jean, a son, Troy Werner, three daughters, Joni Gruss, Michelle Alker, and Friday Apaliski, and seven grandchildren.
A memorial celebration will be held the evening of Sunday March 4th for family and friends - please contact Jean or Friday for details.
Anyone wishing to honor George and his love of the sea, the City, and the Bay can make a donation to the Ocean Conservancy
