

John was born on February 24, 1936, to Jessie Yee and Philip Lum. He grew up in Oakland, California, and graduated from Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda. John earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of San Francisco and his PhD in Educational Policy Planning from the University of California, Berkeley. He worked over 35 years as an administrator and teacher with the San Francisco Unified School District and specialized in education for students with English as a second language. After retirement, he worked as a UC Berkeley Admissions Specialist and volunteered as a docent at the Asian Art Museum. A faithful servant of God and a dedicated educator, John was passionate in collecting stamps, coins, and Asian art.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; sons, John (Lilian) and David (Nicole); and grandchildren, Aiden, Tessa, Kyle, and Adam. He was predeceased by his sisters, Frances and Victoria, and brother, Philip.
Visitation will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at San Francisco Columbarium & Funeral Home, 1 Loraine Court, San Francisco, CA 94118. Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at St. Ignatius Church, 650 Parker Ave., San Francisco, CA 94118.
