John W. Ratto, age 96, died peacefully on December 10th in San Francisco after a short illness. Son of immigrants Alfredo and Enrichetta Ratto, John was born and raised in San Francisco's North Beach district, which he lived nearby for most of his life. During his youth, John was active in a number of sports, playing baseball at one time for the San Francisco Crusaders. John was also an accomplished musician who oftentimes played the accordion at family parties and community events. For over 50 years, John was a co-owner of Alfredo Ratto and Sons, an appliance and electronics retailer located on Columbus Avenue. During World War II, John utilized his skills as a ham radio operator working for an intelligence contractor to the U.S. Navy in San Diego. In retirement John especially enjoyed fishing and hanging out with his fishing buddies.
John will be dearly missed by his sister (Mary Guinasso), five nephews (Alex Pellegrini, Victor and Rennie Guinasso, Ski and Robert Ratto), one niece (Diana Pellegrini), and six grand nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Rose, his brother Alfred, and his two brother-in-laws, Alexander Pellegrini and Rinaldo Guinasso. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to John's wonderful and dedicated caregivers for the past few years: Irene Moungaloa, Marlon Vave and Holo Moungaloa, as well as other members of Irene's family who assisted in John's care. Private services for the family were held on December 13th. Donations may be made to the Salesian Boys' and Girls' Club, 680 Filbert Street, San Francisco, CA 94133, or a charity of your choice.
