Dear Fisher-Paulson Family,
I met Kevin while he was studying for his MBA at the University of Michigan. We lived in co-op housing together and cooked for 120 people every other week. We had so much fun.
When Kevin moved to NYC, we lost touch for a while and then 
re-united when I moved there a couple years later. I stayed in his Jersey City apartment while apartment hunting, went to Kevin and Brian’s wedding at the Greenwich Village bar and lost touch again when we moved far from one another.  I’ve followed the blog and the columns and was glad to see that he had a life full of adventure, love and found his audience as a writer.

Sunday September 7th....you are so missed.  Your written words, your keen intelligence, your wit...YOU.  A one of a kind human who came here on earth to show other humans how to live a better life....thank you for your time here on earth...we wanted MORE time with you....fly with the angels for you were one here on earth....always in our hearts....xoxoxo diana e garibaldi, Burlingame. Hard to believe it’s been a year without my best friend Kevin. I am still learning about how many lives you touched. You may not be here anymore but you live on in your writing and all of the people who loved you. Your memory will always be a blessing.

Sitting in my late mother’s house some months after her passing, I can see her copy of Secrets of the Blue Bungalow. I read its stories to her as she lay in her final days, only weeks after Kevin himself died. She could no longer speak, but she could still visibly affirm that she was enjoying Kevin’s stories for one last time. 

She was among the legions of Chronicle readers for whom those columns brightened their days, infusing warmth and meaning over many years. His was a remarkable spirit. 

How sad that Kevin Fisher-Paulson is no more. But how marvelous that he lived! I am grateful for him and for the family that he shared with so many of us.

I am a long time fan of Kevin's column and his books. 

His writing gave me tears of joy and sadness; gave me an appreciation for even the annoyances of everyday life and family. 

He and Brian became beacons of inspiration and hope. They set the best example of love, friendship, patience and perseverance.

Kevin is missed.

To Brian, Aidan, Zane, Brother X, and Brother XX: I'm so very sorry for your loss. Though I never met him in person, I felt I knew Kevin from his weekly stories and his books and the few emails we shared. And in turn, you all. It takes great courage and honesty to be able to share your truth and I so admired Kevin for that. I also was touched by his kindness, his humor, and his ability to see the good in life, even in the darkest times. The grief journey is hard and I send you all and all his friends much love to surround you in the coming days. May his memory be a blessing.

Although we only met on a few occasions I always considered Kevin to be a friend. He was like that. Immediately put anyone at ease and was warm, attentive and interested in whatever one had to say

Kevin was a wonderful person, father, husband, friend, sheriff …. And an extremely talented writer. Like so many others I waited anxiously for his weekly columns to appear They were delightful, informative, thought provoking and made us look at ourselves and our world from different perspectives. . For that I thanked him (repeatedly) in our infrequent but sincere FB interactions.  I grew up reading Herb Caen, Art Hoppe and many other great writers in the SF area. Kevin’s writings/musings always reminded me of those columnists. I frequently told him so. But in his typical humble fashion he would demur and say thank you but I’m not in their league …

Yes he was. 

For all the enrichment he provided to me and others I will be eternally grateful.

Kevin leaves a legacy that will shine a light far beyond his passing. Through him, we got to know his beloved family, and through him we were reminded of what is really important as he shared words of wisdom, which will be with me always. He also inspired laughter, wit, irreverence, which are also treasures indeed. I am wishing grace and resilience to Brian, Zane, and Aiden. Far too short a life for a beloved husband and father, but I hope the love and dedication Kevin showed will continue to be a blessing to his family forever. I cried when I read about Kevin's diagnoses,  and I cried and smiled when I read that one of his charities is the Innocence Project - a cause extremely dear to my heart. I hope many people will donate to that project in Kevin's name - it seems to exemplify so many things that were important to him.

I had the pleasure of working with Chief Fisher-Paulson (who always said..."Please just call me Kevin") through his many years of service as an employee of the San Francisco Sheriff's Office. Working in the jails is hard and it can understandably harden people. Not Kevin. His humanity, his sense of humor, his ability to quote all kinds of authors past and present, most of whom I've never heard of, were firmly in tact. He had a shield on his office walls from one of the Marvel super heros.....not sure which one. Because of Kevin's leadership, we were able to make so many improvements in the jail which made things a little easier for people incarcerated there and their families. We made jail phone calls free. We created a special visiting room with a colorful mural and books so children could visit their families. And did so many other things. Kevin, you were a pleasure to work with, you always strived to do the right thing and not just the easy thing....and we had a lot of fun and laughs doing it. San Francisco, the jails, and certainly my workday, were always better with you in it. Rest in Peace my friend. Anne Stuhldreher

I’m so very sorry for your loss.   I only knew Kevin through his column, but what a guy!     He shared a relentless optimism, a positivity, a joy.  No matter what was happening, in the darkest of times, a candle was burning in the window.   He made me laugh and cry and feel as if I was a part of his community.  He loved you all so much, and I send a big hug to each one of you.

There were only two times I have cried when hearing about the death of a public figure.  The first was Herb Caen.  The second Kevin Fisher-Paulson....interestingly both Chronicle writers.  When Kevin wrote, it was like getting a weekly call from a good friend just to catch-up.  I miss you Kevin.  Happy travels to wherever the universe takes you.

There are so many of us out in the world who feel like we know you and Kevin--it must be a little weird, I suppose. I looked forward to Kevin's column every week in my analog newspaper, and enjoyed it every time. Please know Kevin is dearly missed by all of us in newspaperland, near and far. Wednesdays don't feel right. 

Sorry to admit I always meant to write to him and just never did it. Guess I'm not the only one in that condition. This is a good lesson not to wait to tell someone how much you appreciate them. Wherever you are Kevin, I hope you are feeling all the love coming your way from all your fans.

 I really and truly thought there would be a miracle that would spare him and all of you from this tragic loss. Now there's another star in the sky and another angel hanging out and having a good laugh. I hope you will all be reunited one day.

As an average Chronicle reader, I think I will remember best Kevin's pride  that his father Hap shot off the lock to a Nazi concentration camp. This is big!
Of course,  there  WAS the dog stuff...

Dear Fisher-Paulson family,

It has been lovely getting to know you through Kevin's column. Boys, I am now a doctor but I had some rough patches in my early 20's. Early adulthood is hard. Losing a father is dreadful. I figured out my life and became a decent citizen by working hard, easing off on bad decisions, and deciding it was worth it.  Grief is hard. It seems to last forever. Don't deny it or allow it to be an excuse for endless chaos. See boys, even Aunties you don't know now think we have the right to give you advise. Hugs to you.

And Brian and brother X and XX, oh boy, I wish this hadn't happened so early in Kevin's life. You deserved more time with him. And he deserved to grow ancient.

What a huge loss for the world.

It always made my Wednesdays better to read Kevin's column in the Chronicle. His kind honest reflections made me feel like we were close personal friends. So glad that I saw him in person when he did a reading at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Kensington last year. I can't believe he's gone. A bright star has gone out in the Bay Area and my Wednesdays are a little less bright.

I'm already missing my Wednesdays with Kevin Fisher Paulson SO much. He wrote from the heart, and he was also so smart, funny, and kind. I found out if you wrote him, he would write you back. He made such a quick connection with so many of us readers. His writing always drew me right in to his world of his amazing children, rescue dogs, and the people who made up his family.

I'm grateful for the time he was here and the words he shared, which seemed much deeper than words.
Gone, but never forgotten.

I always meant to send a note to Kevin after reading his column because he always made me feel better that day.  He made us all feel connected and reminded us how important family is.  He let us into his home every week and we cheered for his kids and his causes. And we learned lots of trivia and history.  One of my favorite columns, which I have misplaced, was about going to his son's school for some kind of career day, and it turned into a history lesson about his personal experiences and activism to promote to gay rights. His description was so vivid and personal.  I learned so much from him.  I looked forward to every article.  Writing this is making me cry again.  We will all miss him so much.  And we are thankful for his words and wisdom.  My deepest condolences to his family and friends.  Lisa P.

How to capture the essence of Kevin? He was so much to so many people. Spouse, Dad, brother, coach, writer, fellow chorister. Friend. Yet so much more. There was that spark to him. I, a midwesterner, initially thought it was an East coast thing. I came to realize it was a Kevin thing.  How lucky we are to have witnessed that spark. 

I view these remembrances as squares of a quilt, coming together in a blanket whole to give us comfort and warmth. Not unlike the quilts Kevin and Brian made for Zane and Aidan. I was glad to contribute to both quilts, to be a small part of a larger family. And now this, Kevin’s quilt. May we all find comfort in it. 

Kevin had a knack for looking up words’ meanings. So now, the meaning of Thaddeus: Good hearted, Courageous heart. That was Kevin. He lived up to his name. With a dash of spark for good measure.

When Kevin told us about his diagnosis, I hoped it would be a long time before this day arrived. The news was shocking, unbelievable, and undeserving for such a good man. I am so very sorry for your pain  
and heartbreak now, but also for sharing every moment of Kevin's 
struggle to face this challenge. You helped him navigate thru complex, scary , unfamiliar territory, learning together and deciding on treatment options. You were his strength, his love, his heart, his will. Kevin was an inspiration to me and I know my life was better having known him,  even though he was taken too soon. Kevin cared deeply about life and living. He is irreplaceable and unforgetable. May God bless him with the best seat in Heaven.

It's impossible to express the void that Kevin's passing leaves. It seemed, at times, that we readers were a part of the family.  That's what made Kevin's work so enticing.  Kevin did respond to every email, and I feel fortunate to have seen and heard him at Books, Inc. for one of his book talks. Yes, his books will be his legacy, and we have those, but what I'm most thankful for are his many words of wisdom--especially the articles like, "Life and Death Etiquette for Friends of Cancer Patients." And "snacky dinners" -- I only wish I'd had those when my own sons were growing up.

What a wonderful person we've lost.  His well-written, often amusing, regularly very meaningful stories of ... ordinary, but extraordinary, life ... showed his deep love, kindness, and concern for his family, friends, and others -- thereby showing how each of us could and should emulate his way of walking through this world, and this life. Kevin, you are one of the most vibrant, energetic, kind, generous, and loving people I have ever known. Your voice, your joy, and your laughter filled every room you were ever in. We have been best friends for so long that you will always be part of me, as I know you will live on in so many hearts and memories. So many fond memories of carefree adventures and road trips in our youth, and of the warm and loving family that you and Brian created together. From now on, Kevin, I will carry you with me on any fun adventure I have so that your joyful spirit can continue being in the world. There is now a Kevin-shaped hole in the universe. The only way to carry on without you will be to find a way to keep your flame alive by carrying on your tradition of being kind and standing up for what is right.

I think we ALL feel like we know Kevin and Brian and Aidan and Zane and doggies (and assorted family members and neighbors of yours).  Thank you for letting us into your lives over all these years, for showing what love really means, and for walking the walk, not just talking the talk.  

We were at Book Passage for one of Kevin's readings/book signings a few years ago - I asked him, are you the nicest person in the world, and Kevin said, no he wasn't.

I became a such fan of Kevin's from the early days of his column.  He was funny and wise, and kind enough to respond to my occasional Facebook messages.  I had hoped, so hoped, he would beat the odds and write his column for at least another eight years.

I’ve really enjoyed Kevin’s columns over the last eight years; they were so warm, refreshing, inviting, and insightful. I loved learning about your family’s life in the blue bungalow in the Outer Excelsior (out of respect, I won’t use his signature line). Kevin shared his experiences so openly, honestly, and courageously; how I appreciate his warmth, sense, and wry humor!

I think I saw him and Brian a couple of times in the Diamond Heights Safeway, but didn’t realize or engage. I’m only sorry I didn’t attend any of Kevin’s book readings (to which I received invitations). Kevin always graciously answered the emails I sent him after reading his columns. 

Kevin, you will be greatly missed, and may you enjoy perpetual life with all your loved ones. May you be there to greet us when it is our turn to transition to the eternal.

Kevin was a gem of a writer who, with his open, honest, and yet humorous words was able to make us feel that he could be a friend, even though we never met in person. I'm so glad he was able to pursue his love of writing, and grew to love his "civil service" job. And that he was able to create a large family that was clearly deeply satisfying to him.

I am so sorry for your loss.  The first thing I did on Wednesday mornings was to read Kevin's columns.  I loved his books too.  What a wonderful person he was, kind, funny, loving, caring, honest, open. Wow.  I am a pancreatic cancer survivor and I wrote to him several times about my cancer experiences, when I thought that might be useful to him.  He always answered.  I am so touched and impressed, since I expect that he must have had hundreds of emails from us readers to answer.

Several months ago I read that Kevin would be doing a reading at Florey's Books  and I decided to attend because I had been reading and loving and crying about Kevin's column for many years.  I expected a small turnout from a small community.  Well, of course, there was barely any standing room and the atmosphere was love and admiration and laughter.  
I miss Kevin and hearing about his family.  God speed.

He is loved and he is missed.  He bravely and eloquently shared so much of his joyous life, we readers felt like he was our own personal friend. I’m so sad that he left so soon. I wish only the best for his beautiful family and that you find peace and healing with each of your memories. A sweet and caring human, a beautiful soul, and a loving father and husband. Rest in peace, Kevin.

The Wednesday addition of the SF Chronicle was always special because that's when Kevin's column would appear.  I believe I read every column he ever wrote.  I even replied to three of them.  Imagine my surprise when I received replies back.

That Kevin Fisher Paulson would take the time to answer me says wonders about the marvelous  person he was - kind, generous and responsive to the needs of others.

"Be Kind."  That was Kevin's wish.  I will try my best.

To Kevins family and friends,
I am sure this is a largely repeated message, but I feel compelled to write it.  My first job was in San Francisco in 1971. I loved the city.  I now live 5 hours away in Susanville Ca but continue to get the chronicle online.  I looked forward to Kevin's writings every week. He became part of everyone's life through his columns.  He will surely be missed.  Hold his memories close and may they weave you a blanket of healing.  If not first love, there is no grief.

I was surprised when I saw him at a book signing in Berkeley a few years ago because he was such a tough guy. Almost like--well, like a tough Irish-American cop! And so he was. But my surprise was caused by the difference between the tough, smart, warm cop in front of me, and the loving, sometimes tortured father, husband, and dogfather whose writing I loved. Not only a great guy, but a truly gifted writer as well. Brian, Aidan, Zane, may you continue to be blessed without his physical presence in your lives as you were blessed by his presence when he was here.

Actually, I see how hat can be seen as offensive, so never mind!

I only discovered Kevin's column late in his career, but I so looked forward to reading and seeing his column every week!

The honesty, and openness as a human being was ever present in his column.  His words were always so uplifting to me.  I used to tell my entire family about what I had read each week I was so moved by his writing.

I hate to see Kevin leave this earth, but I know his spirit will stick around. What a wonderful man, full of joy and love and humor and wisdom. Like all of us he was human and I'm sure he had his faults, but I know he loved his husband and family and friends deeply and had beautiful gifts to share with all of us, including his legion of devoted readers. Just thinking of him makes me want to cry because his columns lifted me up and reminded me that we can live our lives well and fully and honestly. Kevin, I wish you eternal peace and your family and friends eventual healing from losing you (but not your spirit, which will stay around).

Kevin Fisher -Paulson deeply touched our lives each week in his article.   My mom had me start reading him, albeit she enjoyed him but that there was a gay man writing it.  My mom was a cancer fighter and survivor over 40 years longer than the doctors expected.  I shared this and told him to fight on.  I was touched he responded.   I give that same hope to his family.   We should all live our lives with a little of Kevin’s humor, passion and love of family.

So sorry to learn of Kevin's passing. I enjoyed following along with the ups and downs of Kevin and the rest of the family. I felt like he was a personal friend and will miss touching in with him each week in my morning paper. He was a wonderful person and had a very impactful life. You are in my thoughts and in my heart at this sad time. Much love to the family.

Kevin was one of a kind, and yet, he was all of us. Thank you, Kevin, for sharing your life with us, enriching ours along the way.

Condolences to the Fisher-Paulson family.

He was a police chief, a newspaper columnist, a husband and a father but I will always remember Kevin as the little blonde headed boy who grew up next door to me.  My condolences to his family.

Like so many readers, I have been enriched and ennobled by Kevin’s writings. My heart goes out to his beautiful family. May their love keep them protected and comforted .
