Margaret E. Van Loo

Margaret E. Van Loo died on February 24, 2018 at her home in San Francisco, CA from complications due to Multiple Sclerosis. The daughter of the late Lofton and Harriet Greene, she was born on February 19, 1945 in Jackson, Michigan.

Following high school in River Rouge, MI, she graduated with a degree in education from the University of Michigan, where she met and married her husband and life-long companion, William C. Van Loo. Later in life, she completed a Master’s degree in Theology from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, CA.

Peg filled her life with many varied interests - synchronized swimming early, then later in life quilting, crossword puzzles and self-publishing children's books - but her greatest passion was her dedication to children. She taught kindergarten in Michigan for seven years, raised four children, two by birth and two adopted, was a strong advocate for adoption, and truly excelled in her role as a grandmother.

Following their move from Poughkeepsie, NY to the Bay Area in 1981, Peg and her husband Bill settled in San Francisco in 2006. Peg could be spotted zipping up and down the hills of her Nob Hill neighborhood on her electric wheelchair.

Peg became very involved in the community at Grace Cathedral, volunteering as a "greeter", creating the "Grace Parents" program to welcome Grace's newly baptized children, and serving as a mentor to a foster child.

She is survived by her husband, William C. Van Loo, children Elena, Bryan, Jonathan and Allison, six brothers and sisters, and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Grace Cathedral 10AM on Thursday, March 22, 2018.
