July 28th 1944 - June 4th 2013
Resident of San Francisco
Passed peacefully in the comfort of her home after a short but ravaging illness; Marija grew up in Kula, Yugoslavia. After her graduation from the Technical College of Subotica in 1963, Marija began her professional career as Chemistry Technician in the metal industry in Kula. In 1972, she became involved in biochemical research which she passionately pursued for the next 34 years, initially at the Max-Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg Germany, then later at the University of California in San Francisco and Cytokinetics in South San Francisco. Her life was minted by kindness for her family and her commitment to justice and peace for everyone.
Marija is survived by her loving husband Norbert Schuff of 33 years, her son Sascha Isakov and daughter-in-law Susanne, her grandchildren Simon and Jana, and her younger sister Joli and younger brother Miklos.
Her family is welcoming those who knew Marija to a viewing on Monday June 17th from 6 to 8pm at Halsted N. Gray-Carew & English mortuary at 1123 Sutter St. in San Francisco, before the embarkment on her last return to Kula. As an expression of sympathy, the family suggests donations in memory of Marija Matuska to Amnesty International:
