Stanley K. Louie

Stanley K. Louie, age 93, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully on January 12, in the presence of his family. He was born January 1, 1922 to Louis Phong and Ng Fei Oy.

Stanley lived in San Francisco since coming from China at the age of 9, and lived above his father's Chinese bookstore, Service Supply Co., on Grant Avenue throughout his childhood. He attended Washington Irving Elementary, Chung Wah Chinese Language, Francisco Junior High and Mission High schools. He trained as a tail gunner in the US Army Air Force during World War II. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Commerce at the University of California, Berkeley under the GI bill in 3 years. He married Phyllis Jow in 1948, who passed away in 1998.

After Berkeley, Stanley was an ambitious entrepreneur, running a laundromat and vending machine business while working full time at Wells Fargo Bank. For the rest of his working life, Stanley was a stockbroker at Bache & Co and Prudential and continued to monitor his stock portfolio long after his retirement. Stanley loved sports, reading and was an avid gardener, enjoying growing dahlias, orchids, fruits and vegetables. He was proud of being one of the few gardeners who was able to grow Lilies of the Valley in foggy San Francisco and shared them with friends and family. He loved to travel and was an adventurous eater. He enjoyed family vacations to US, Canada, Asia, Europe and, recently, Australia and New Zealand.

He is survived by children, Katie (Sam Wong), Larry (Jocelyn Fong) and Pam (Donald Zehnder), grandsons (Greg Wong, Daniel Louie, Alexander Wong, Philip Zehnder), granddaughters (Melissa Wong Kim, Lindsay Louie, Kimberly Louie, Veronica Zehnder), great grandsons (Tyler Kim, Bodhi Wong) and great granddaughters (Chloe Kim, Olive Wong).

The memorial service will be held on Sunday January 18, 1pm, at Old St Mary's Church, 660 California St., San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Mary's Chinese Mission, 838 Kearny St., San Francisco, CA 94108, or your favorite charity.
