Norma Luz Caldera (née Cuellar) passed away at her home in San Gabriel on the morning of May 14, 2022. She was born in Los Angeles on October 19, 1946, to Carlos Cuellar and Ninfa Ramirez. Norma was a graduate of the Garfield High School Class of 1964.
She worked in a variety of positions, including work at a medical office in her early years and later at a law firm and at the county courthouse. In 1998, she began work at the USC Department of Preventive Medicine as a project assistant; she stayed with USC till her retirement in late 2020.
Norma, a survivor of breast cancer, was known for her resilience and determination, her tireless work ethic, her independent spirit, and her kindness and generosity.
Norma’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her children, Rudy Jr., Marlene, and Letech; her three grandchildren, Jonathan, Lauren, and Porter; and her dog, Milo. She enjoyed sharing meals at home - she was known for her enchiladas and salsas - or going out to eat, especially at local favorites El Sombrero in El Monte and Alex di Peppe’s, Cabrera’s, and Chef’s Coffee Shop in Arcadia. She also especially loved shopping with her family. Norma loved the outdoors, making visits from time to time to the desert or the beach; she also loved tending the small garden in her yard.
Finally, no description of Norma would be complete with mentioning her love of dancing to her favorite music, especially Donna Summer, Luther Vandross, and Teddy Pendergrass. She also loved playing her tunes in the car and singing along.
A visitation for Norma will be held Monday, June 6, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Pierce Brothers Turner & Stevens Mortuary, 1136 East Las Tunas Drive, San Gabriel, CA 91776. There will be a rosary for Norma at 6 pm on Monday as well.
A funeral service will occur Tuesday, June 7, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Therese Catholic Church, 1100 E Alhambra Rd, Alhambra, CA 91801. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, June 7, 2022 from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Resurrection Cemetery, 966 N Potrero Grande Dr., Rosemead, CA 91770. The repast will be held immediately following the graveside services at El Sombrero, 3550 Santa Anita Ave, El Monte, CA 91731.
