I didn't teach Abel, but I was lucky enough to still interact with him. He was such a kind and creative person. He reached out to me last year during distance learning to see if Creative Writing students would be willing to do a collaboration with him. He created a song on piano and students wrote poetry inspired by it. Abel was an incredibly special person and we will all miss him so much.  

Pelon, Abelito, my little cousin. You will be missed. You were such a kind and noble soul. Amidst the hustle and bustle and stress of daily life, and even during the darkest of times, you always chose to show compassion and love for others. You were the light and sun for us. 

When I first heard you were going to eastside and also studying so hard, I thought to myself Abel is going to make it big. Already I was so proud of you for being such a great example to us your family, your friends, and everyone who has met you. 

I thank God that Gigi had such a great best friend and role model. Rest In Peace our Angel. 

In addition to being one of the kindest, most thoughtful students, Abel was such a curious learner.  He brought out the best in everyone.

ABEL  me es difícil creer que ya no estás aquí, pero puedo decirte que fui muy afortunada de compartir bonitos momentos contigo,  y bastaron para que te quedarás en mi corazón ❤️. Siempre te recordaré con mucho cariño, dejaste huella en muchas personas. Hoy Dios tiene un ser maravilloso con el 🙏🙏

Just a few days into his 10th grade year, after moving to Sacramento, Abel emailed to announce that he'd be returning to Eastside and had already completed most of his summer reading book. :) What a blessing for our school community that Abel decided to come back, and I thank his family for making that possible.

Abel was exceedingly kind and compassionate--he wrote a reflective essay called "How It Feels to Be Caring Me"--and brightened every space he was in. I loved watching him play piano, and I still have "Someone You Loved" stuck in my head from when he played it in December 2019!

After he finished 10th grade on Zoom, he often emailed me, asking how it felt to teach the new freshmen online and telling me how excited he was to participate in online discussions for his summer reading book. He and his friends wanted to show me some elaborate Minecraft scenario that I couldn't understand, and he recorded their game and sent me a detailed play-by-play so I could try to make sense of it. I loved seeing how he fostered community and connection among his friends even in the pandemic. Upon returning to campus this year, he made it a point to stop by my room, even though I didn't teach him this year, just to say hello and catch up.

What a gift you were to all of us, Abel. We miss you tremendously.

Puedes llorar por que se ha ido, o puedes sonreír porque ha vivido.
Puedes cerrar los ojos y rezar para que vuelva, o puedes abrirlos y mirar todo lo que nos ha dejado ; tu corazón puede estar vacío por qué no lo puedes ver , o puede estar lleno del amor que compartiste con el.
Puedes llorar, cerrar tu mente, sentir el vacío y dar la espalda, o puedes hacer lo que a él le gustaría: sonreír, abrir los ojos y mirar lo maravilloso que es el mundo, amar y seguir.

 Hoy te escribo desde mi corazón con toda la fuerza que solo una madre puede sentir, te agradezco infinitamente que me hayas permitido ser tu mamá.
Siempre estuve orgullosa de ti, por todos tus logros, metas y sueños, por ser una gran persona. Eras noble, humilde, amoroso, paciente pero sobre todo eras un verdadero Angel.
Se que te voy a extrañar, pero sé que me estarás esperando allá donde el amor de Dios nos vuelve a unir.
Fueron casi 17 años que gozamos el estar juntos, en vivir día a día compartiendo nuestras vidas.
Hoy te agradezco Padre, por el regalo de prestarme a mi hijo, te lo entrego con dolor en el alma, pero llena de amor, pido que lo guíes a tus brazos de luz divina, que lo recibas y lo arropes en tu misericordia.

Eres el ángel más hermoso que tiene dios nuestro señor y se que cuando yo vea para el cielo, ai estarás tú mi niño, me falto tanto por disfrutar de ti ahora de adolescente, Abelito te mando un abrazo asta el cielo, me duele mi corazón pero se que ya no sufres te quiero mi niño 😢

Mi niño, me es dicil creer que no estás aquí, pero puedo decir que fui muy afortunada de ser tu tía, tuve la oportunidad de conocer un gran ser humano en todos la extensión de la palabra, tu sencillez, carisma, humildad, compasión y amor hacia los demás, un excelente hijo y hermano.

Se que vivirás por siempre en el corazón de muchas personas, porque dejaste huella y que hoy Dios tiene un Angel maravilloso en el cielo. 



Te quiero mucho hermanito, eres un buen niño y estas con los angelitos y Dios. Te extraño mucho. 

Abel sent me an email last summer asking if I would help him build a PC for himself. I was thrilled at the prospect and looked forward to the day. He had very carefully researched the parts list and when all the components he chose arrived, he brought the pile of boxes in.  While we assembled the parts we had the most delightful conversation about family, going to college, what we did in our spare time and how to choose a career. The hours passed all too  quickly and by mid afternoon the  project was finished. I remember the absolute best moment of that day when he pushed the power button and his PC came to life. His eyes opened wide and he radiated joy. That will be the Abel I remember.

What can I say about Abel that everyone doesn't already know. It's not fair that I have to be writing a message like this so soon after meeting this guy only 4 years ago. But in that 4 years, Abel taught me so much about what it means to be in the service of other people and to lend yourself to a cause that is bigger than yourself. At the height of the pandemic, I was on the brink of collapse and I honestly didn't see a way out. Abel was one of the only people who grabbed my arm and pulled me from the abyss I was in. He told me that the best thing we could ever do for the people we love is to keep moving forward and work hard everyday to uplift them through our own successes. From here on Abel, I will honor you and your memory by choosing to move forward and live everyday that I have on this earth exactly like you did, with a smile on my face and no regrets. See you on the other side hermano.

Abel was a kind, thoughtful person who listened to everyone and put others before himself. His classmates chose him to be Editor of the Yearbook and he filled the role passionately with his insights and leadership. Abel had a keen sense of artistic design and musicality. He brought joy and comfort to those around him. I will miss him and the positive light he provided to our lives.


Abel was one of the kindest students I knew. I still remember his bright smile in my summer bridge class, the joy of him moving into the dorms, and will forever be grateful to him for being a ray of sunshine during the pandemic. In my tutorial he would tell me when he was working on in different font which would make me smile without fail. I am devastated at this loss. Rest in peace 

Abel was such an important part of his class community because of the way he always held everyone in his heart, including his teachers. One day when he was in 10th grade, he brought me a motivational poster he had colored because he said it made him think of me. So few 15 year old boys have that much consideration for others! What a pure heart. He will be missed every day.

We will miss you dearly Abel! Always in our hearts ❤️ 

Hermanito, I miss you so much!!! Remember all the good times we had together, I remember all of them as if it was just yesterday. You always did love bringing everyone together.  It's not fair you got taken away from us too soon. I believe you are in heaven so happy watching over us.  You will forever remain in my thoughts and heart. Until we meet again. I love you so much!
