On Saturday, September 26, 2020, Akimi Gyotoku peacefully passed away at home, at the age of 90. He was surrounded by his family and was recovering from a recent heart attack and an ongoing battle with kidney disease. He will be remembered for his generosity and time spent helping family and friends.
Aki was born in Salinas, California. He lived there until his family was interned in Poston, Arizona. His family then relocated to San Jose. Aki graduated from San Jose High School. He graduated from the Carpenters Union Apprentice School in 1953 and received a Trade Certificate in Carpentry. His love of carpentry led him to his next career where he was hired as a carpenter with the Hiatt Brothers building homes and cabins in
Tahoe and in the Bay Area. In 1954 he enlisted in the Army. Later, Aki worked for the City of San Jose for 25 years in the General Services Department.
One night he met the love of his life, May at a YBA dance practice. Aki and May were married for 59 years. Aki is survived by his wife May, his two daughters, Sheryl (John) Nagata, and Lynn (Frank) Arikata. They always amazed their children at weddings as they danced away. They enjoyed taking ballroom dance lessons. Their love of travel took them to Japan, cruises to the Caribbean and Mexico. Upon purchasing an RV, they were off on road trips that took them as far as Alaska, Canada, and even New York. Aki and May especially loved the bus trips to Reno with friends. His greatest joy was becoming a Grandpa to Amanda, Kyle, and Janelle. Aki is survived by his siblings: Sachi (Paul, deceased) Murata, (Tom Gyotoku, deceased), May (Albert, deceased) Sasao, Jean (Tom, deceased) Hiraishi, Barbara, (Doc, deceased) Cogburn, Seito (Nancy) Gyotoku and many nieces and nephews.
Private funeral service have been held.
