
Charles Welch Caveney, Jr., affectionately known as Chuck, passed away on March 27, 2025, at the age of 80. He was born on June 10, 1944, in Indiana, Pennsylvania and grew up in Brooktondale, New York. Most recently, he resided in San Jose, California. During his high school years, Chuck was an avid Boy Scout Member, becoming an Eagle Scout and in the Marching Band where he played drums. After graduating, he joined the ROTC and attended Cornell University and State University of New York Cortland, where he graduated with a BS degree in biology and chemistry. He proudly served in the United States Navy where he was stationed on several different ships. Following his active duty service, he joined the Navy Reserves where he retired as a Navy Captain. In the private sector, he built a distinguished career as a project manager and manager of B2B and B2C in the tech industry, working for companies such as National Semi Conductor, Fairchild, Signetics, Atari, Hewlett Packard, Agilent, and Cisco.
A man of many passions, Chuck enjoyed the outdoors and computers. He was incredibly knowledgeable and intelligent with a quick wit and treasure trove of facts. He always had a bad dad joke at the ready or some random oddly funny quip. The ever-scholar and forever Navy man, he always stayed up to date on the military, current affairs, and technology. He also enjoyed following the local sports teams, including the San Francisco Forty-Niners, the San Francisco Giants, and the San Jose Sharks. He was also deeply devoted to his family—enjoying the adventures of his 2 daughters and 2 sons. Helping with things such as school lessons, soccer games, dance lessons, cheer leading events, or worldly travels. He never missed a chance to spend time with his wife, children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and his beloved dog, Smurf. Chuck always lived life with enthusiasm and warmth. Known for his personality, he would gladly stop to chat or help anyone he encountered. He loved to meet new people and chat with both neighbors and strangers alike, sharing stories and making all feel comfortable with his genuine laugh. He also took great pride in his home, from DIY projects, to the yard, to the exterior holiday decor. These became the hallmark and a reflection of his dedication to hard work, as well as his whimsical nature.
Chuck was married to his wife, Edwina, for 51 wonderful years. He raised 2 daughters: Dawn M. Caveney of Roseville, CA; Kimberley A. Caveney of Roseville, CA; and 2 sons: Steven C. Caveney of Aurora, CO; and Christopher M. (Amy) Caveney of Temecula, CA; and He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Aiden Gerber, Logan Caveney, and Paige Caveney; a sister, Barbara “Babs” Cranfield of Red Creek, NY, and a brother, Raymond Caveney of Brooktondale, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marguerite Caveney. Charles’s legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Charles’s love for family, adventurous spirit, and lifelong dedication to those around him will remain an enduring testament to a life well-lived.
Funeral services and internment will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 11:30 am at the Sacramento National Cemetery in Dixon, CA. A gathering of friends and family will be held after to the service at a local location.
