Elisabeth Ann (Gilbert) Hannibal, known by friends and loved ones as Betty, 88, of San Jose, CA, passed from this life to be with our dear Lord and Savior in Manteca, CA, on Wednesday, November 22, 2023.
On March 8, 1935, Betty was born in Ogden, UT, to Milton and Mildred Gilbert. At the age of two, Betty’s family moved to San Jose, California. She acquired a love for the area, always considering it her home. There she went on to graduate from Campbell High School, class of ‘52. In 1951, Betty and Arthur A. Hannibal wed in San Jose, CA. During their twenty-year marriage, they welcomed three children, Arthur, Robert, and Kathy. In 1972, Betty began her career as a Material Control Analyst for FMC and later for Prunella, where she retired in 2019.
Betty always prioritized her family's needs over hers, and her love for us was always known. Although there were times her children questioned if “she loved her dogs more than them?”. They knew in their hearts that was untrue because of her consistent devotion to them, even as a single mother. She made the best of any situation, always finding joy in the little things of life, such as her excitement shown when guests arrived at her home, seeing the joy of grandkids picking out what they would buy with the money she gifted them, watching grandkids and great-grandkids play with toys found in her wooden toy box, exploring the vintage treasures she displayed throughout her home, climbing the hill in her backyard, and sneaking cookies from her pig cookie jar. Some fond memories include all 10 of us packed into a van for trips with our cousins (the Bonsalls), days at the beach, Monterey bike rides, family camping trips, and Reno air races.
Her passion for Disneyland was passed on to all of us. Disneyland trips with her family (including special grandchildren's trips) were some of the happiest moments for Betty and all who joined. All who knew Betty knew her love for the many dogs she considered family and the joy they brought her over the years. Betty often watched Nascar races on TV. She loved vintage cars and hot rods; in her earlier years, she even owned a few. Her son, Robert, recalls her saying she sold her accordion to buy the car she learned to drive in, a 1940 Ford convertible. She enjoyed dancing and would always attend weekly dances with friends she had made at her round dancing group.
Betty is survived by her three children, Arthur (Liz) Hannibal, Robert (Carrie) Hannibal, and Kathy (Chris) Durant; thirteen grandchildren, Kristy (Sheldon), Shannon, Jessica, Mike (Amber), Jordan (Selenia), Carissa (Michael), Justin (Anna Marie), Lindsey (Sam), Ben, Nick, Kaylee (Austin), Ben, Emily, Sara, and Kasey; twenty great-grandchildren; and the father of her children, Arthur Hannibal. She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton Gilbert, Mildred Gilbert, and her sister, Constance “Connie” Bonsall.
Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma Betty, we will all miss you so much and miss visiting you on Canna Lane.
The celebration of life for Betty Ann Hannibal will be held at Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park Rose Chapel in San Jose, CA (300 Curtner Ave.), on the 25th day of March, two thousand twenty-four at 1:00pm. Ashes to be interred at Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park at 2:15pm.
