Evangelina Rodriguez Maldonado was born on August 22, 1930 in Chihuahua, Mexico. She grew up in the town of Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua with her parents Manuel and Herlinda Rodriguez and her numerous siblings. She met her husband, Ramiro Elias Maldonado, when they were 16 and 18. They didn't see each other until their relationship truly began 8 years later. During this time, she became a teacher at the local ranches and tiny pueblos, even though she only had a 6th grade education. This ensured that her younger sisters could continue their education. Angelina and Ramiro were married in 1956 and moved to Watsonville, California, where they began raising their family. In 1967 they moved to San Jose, CA and purchased their current home in 1971. Once all of her children were in school, she began working in the Oak Grove School District as a noon duty assistant at the junior high school behind their home. She volunteered at the schools and co-founded Las Madres en Accion, a group of women who worked in classified positions in the Oak Grove School District. This group's mission was to give a voice to the Latino children in the district and set up scholarship funds for Latino students, which are still given out, 35 years later. She continued this work until she retired to babysit her grandchild, who were the loves of her life.
Evangelina is survived by her beloved husband, Ramiro Maldonado; loving mother to Alma (Guillermo), Ramiro Jr., Elsa (John), Osvaldo (Diane), and Olga (Paul); and devoted grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 8. She is also survived by numerous family members.
