José Roberto Flores, affectionately known by his family and friends as “El Gato” or “Papa Gato”, unexpectedly passed away peacefully in his home on the evening of September 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 75 years of age at the time of his passing.
José was born on June 4, 1950, in Santa Tecla, La Libertad, El Salvador, to Maria Esperanza Pineda and José Maria Flores. He was the fourth of 5 children.
At the young age of 15, he met the love of his life — a young Aida who would become his lifelong partner, best friend, and wife. They married on August 27, 1971, and would go on to spend more than five decades building a life rooted in love, faith, and unwavering commitment.
In 1983, José migrated to San José, California, to reunite with his wife who arrived in 1981, and his children who arrived the year after - though he would visit often. Determined to provide a better future for them, he brought with him a tireless work ethic, deep humility, and the strength of a man who never backed down from sacrifice. He was an electromechanical engineer by trade - a profession that he carried with him from his hometown in El Salvador, and one that he carried out with pride.
But José’s gifts extended far beyond his work and his mind. Known for his creativity and hands-on brilliance, he was constantly inventing, fixing, building, and sharing what he knew. His driveway was famously home to his powder-blue van — a long-standing symbol of his mechanical curiosity.
José also had a deep love for cooking, especially when it meant bringing people together. His sopa de patas was legendary, full of flavor and comfort; and his juicy, perfectly seasoned Thanksgiving turkey became a centerpiece of cherished family traditions. He thrived during family get-togethers, always laughing, indulging in conversation, and simply enjoying the presence of those he loved.
Whether he was mentoring others, tinkering with a new project, tracking his wife’s medication, or simply being a constant presence whenever his loved ones were in need, his love language was irrefutably acts of service.
Above all, José was a proud provider and caregiver — loving, selfless, reliable and constant. His children describe him as a figure that always ‘had their backs’ during trying times.
José is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Aida; his mother, Maria; two siblings, Haydee and Mauricio; four children - Roxana, Robert, Monica, and Hector; four grandchildren - Haley, Joshua, Leilani, and Evalize; and two great-grandchildren, Mia and Royce, all of whom carry his legacy in their hearts and lives. He was preceded in death by his father, 2 siblings, and other loved ones who now welcome him home.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate José’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 14, from 11:00 AM at Oak Hill Memorial Park in San José, followed by the burial at 12:00 PM and a celebration of life immediately thereafter. More details will be shared with family and friends. He would be thrilled to know that all of his family and friends came together with his physical self for one last family gathering.
José “El Gato” Flores will be remembered for his piercing green eyes, his gentle strength, and his unwavering commitment to his family. His mind was extraordinary, his hands built and fixed, his food nourished, and his presence comforted. Though his spirit has moved on, his love endures. May it be felt with every passing powder-blue van, crank of a wrench, gathering of loved ones, and selfless act performed.
