Judith (“Joy”) Apostol Reyno Floreza, was born on June 26, 1921, in San Felipe, Zambales, Philippines to Felix Carpio Reyno and Angela Puzon Apostol Reyno. She had a younger sister, late Lydia Reyno, whom she adored. In 1941, Judith graduated from Harris Memorial College in Taft Avenue, Manila, Philippines with a Bachelor of Science degree in Christian Education and became a kindergarten teacher in San Narciso, Zambales. 5 years later, Judith met the love of her life, U.S. Navy Chief Officer, Arturo Aranas Floreza. They married on March 26, 1947, and later had 7 children. She lovingly raised her children: Ruth, Eunice, late Manuela, Loida, Edna, Arthur, Joel, and her grandniece – adopted daughter Debora. As a mother, she loved and taught about God, served her church, and helped the less fortunate in her hometown. She served as a leader of her church and received many “Mother of the Year” awards from the San Felipe United Methodist Church. She also served as the President of the Women Society of the United Methodist Church and a stockholder of Zambales Central Institute High School in San Felipe.
On January 28, 1973, Arturo passed away, and Judith endured many challenges as she became the sole supporter of her children. Judith overcame hardships and was resilient to put all her children through school, with each graduating college: Ruth, BSN, RN, LNHA; Eunice, Cosmetology; Manuela, Bachelor of Science in Finance and Banking; Loida, BSN, RN; Edna BSN, RN; Arthur, Doctor of Medicine; and Joel, Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering. Judith sacrificed having Ruth, Eunice, Manuela, and Joel go to the U.S. by themselves for more opportunities to live the “American Dream”, while she was in Philippines taking care of Loida, Edna, Arthur and Debora. However, on November 3, 1975, she endured another loss, as her daughter, Manuela, passed away in the U.S.
Living in San Felipe and San Narcisco, Zambales for over 50 years, Judith moved to the U.S. in 1975; and Loida, Edna, Arthur and Debora followed later. In the U.S., Judith lived in all areas of San Jose for decades, Southern California, and Lathrop; yet she continued to serve her church in the Philippines, by sending food, clothing, and financial assistance to the San Felipe United Methodist Church. Judith’s love for the church moved her to start a church in Lalec, San Felipe, Zambales with the purpose to spread the Word of God and care for the Aeta Tribes in the area. Because of her passion to serve her community in the Philippines and the U.S., she received the 2003 “Family Heritage Award of the Year” from the Kaisahan of San Jose Dance Company in the U.S..
Throughout her 102 years of life and even after her passing, she is still an inspiration to many people. Whether it be her love for God, love for the church, love for the Philippines and the U.S., conversations about politics and news, travel, and her love for baseball (especially the Oakland A’s), she touched many lives.
With her love for God and her faithfulness, Judith raised her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to not only know God, but to also accept Jesus as their personal Savior. She leaves behind 3 generations who will strive to continue her legacy.
