Larry Wayne Jessen Sr., 78, of San Jose, California, passed away on September 11, 2025. Born on July 14, 1947, in Greybull, Wyoming, Larry—affectionately known to many as “Grumpy”—was a straight shooter with a generous heart. His words could be blunt, but if you needed help and asked, he showed up.
A 1965 graduate of Marysville High School, Larry measured success in milestones that anchored a life well lived: paying off his home, taking great pride in watching his children graduate from high school, and giving countless evenings and weekends to their activities. He was never far from a notepad—keeping meticulous stats for his kids’ teams, a quiet testament to the pride he took in their efforts. He found joy in the rumble of NASCAR attending many races and followed sports through every season.
Larry also gave back to his community. During the years his children played, he served as Player Agent for Alum Rock Little League, advocating for fairness and fun while helping families navigate the season.
He was the son of the late Lulu Gertrude Krause and Stafford Reynold Jessen. Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Rae Jessen; his daughter, Esther Anna Marie Hope; his brothers, Ralph Richard Herring and Fred Loren Herring; and his sister, Lucy Ann Hendricks. He is survived by his sons, Ralph Wylie Jessen, Rodney Wade Jessen, and Larry Wayne Jessen Jr.; and his brother, James Jessen.
A gathering to celebrate Larry’s life will be held Sunday, October 5, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. All who knew him are welcome to attend and share stories of a man who, beneath a gruff exterior, loved deeply, wanted the best for others, and left a legacy of loyalty, hard work, and family pride.
