Paul was born in Redford, Texas to the late Alfonso and Guadalupe Alvarado. He was one of thirteen siblings and a twin to Leo. Paul and his siblings enjoyed growing up at their Grandfather Papa Pancho's hacienda. Paul often shared cherished memories of life at the ranch. In 1940, the family moved to Alpine, Texas. Paul enjoyed boxing and with the encouragement of his coach he enrolled in a boxing training program, and became a skilled boxer; this passion he passed on to his son, Leo. Paul also loved to dance and danced a great jitterbug.
World War II impacted the Alvarado family when Paul's older brothers Alberto and Alvaro were drafted. The economy forced the family to move from Texas to California in 1946 in search of a better life. Paul, Leo and their brother Adolfo worked in a pottery factory and food canneries to help support the family.
In 1954 Paul met the love of his life, Monica, at a dance and they married a year later. They had two children, Leopoldo, Jr. and Mario. Paul's life revolved around his family. He and Monica would often go dancing on weekends. His sons Leo Jr. and Mario were his pride and joy. The family would spend vacation time in Aptos and Capitola, go on Sunday drives, dine-out and go camping. Paul wholeheartedly supported his sons in all their sports and activities and modeled for them how to play hard and work hard.
Paul became the manager of the Burger Bar, and it is fair to say that he employed many of his nieces and nephews over many years. This opportunity allowed the cousins to get to know each other as well as learning a good work ethic. Paul later became co-owner of the Burger Pit.
Giving and service to the community were among Paul's greatest attributes. He volunteered for P. A. L., functions at his sons' schools and cooked for the Moose Lodge. Paul loved bringing people together. He also enjoyed spending time with his extended family, and along with his siblings and cousins started the Los Primos Club.
Paul and Monica lived a beautiful love story for 66 years of marriage and passed on all their love on to their sons. They would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in January, 2021.
