Born on August 3, 1945, in Pola, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines, Marlyn was the youngest of four children of Justo and Maria Paradero. Though she had a natural talent for accounting, her dreams stretched far beyond what was familiar. Determined and full of hope, she journeyed to the United States at just 20 years old, settling in Staten Island, NY.to work as a Medical Technologist. After a move to New Haven, CT It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Dr. Urbano (“Bobby”) Magboo, and began building the beautiful life that would define her story.
Their first daughter, Michelle, was born during their time in St. Louis, MO, where Marlyn was joined by her devoted sister Nora. Family meant everything to her, and their home was always filled with warmth. After chapters in Rochester, NY and Toronto, Canada, the cold winters—and especially Michelle’s dislike for them—led the family to begin anew in Northern California.
They first made a home in Daly City before planting deeper roots in San Jose, where Marlyn played an essential role in establishing and managing her husband’s dental practice. Not long after, their second daughter, Lauren, arrived, completing the family she cherished above all else.
Marlyn’s life was a beautiful balance of dedication and adventure. She managed a thriving dental office, lovingly raised her two daughters, and traveled widely—to the Philippines and across the world—always with those she loved most. When her daughters moved to San Francisco and Los Angeles, she visited often, never missing a chance to be with them. And when at home, she delighted in spending time with her husband and her sister Nora—they were affectionately known as the “Three Musketeers.”
After the heartbreaking loss of both her sister and her husband, Marlyn made a courageous new start in San Francisco, wanting to be closer to her daughters. She embraced becoming a “city girl,” fully immersing herself in the beauty, energy, and flavors of the city. She especially adored shopping—Neiman Marcus was her sanctuary—and treasured the annual tradition of celebrating Lauren’s birthday at the Rotunda during the holiday season.
Marlyn is preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob and her cherished sister Nora Paradero. She is survived by her daughters, Michelle Magboo Hunter (Mark) and Lauren Magboo, who will forever carry her love, strength, and spirit in their hearts.
A viewing and funeral mass will be held on Thursday, December 11th at Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park in San Jose, CA. Viewing will take place from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral mass at 2:00 PM.
