Born on February 10, 1941, in Marshall, Texas, Otis lived a life rooted in love, loyalty, and connection. He passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side—just as he lived, surrounded by those who loved him.
Otis was a protector at heart. He watched over his family and loved ones with quiet strength, always making sure the people around him were safe, supported, and never alone. But alongside that strength was a spirit full of humor. He had an off-the-wall sense of humor—making jokes, silly faces, and even being stubborn on purpose just to get a reaction. He knew how to make people laugh, even on their hardest days.
He was easy to talk to, the kind of person people naturally turned to. Many came to him for advice about life, and he never held back—he spoke honestly, from the heart, and with wisdom that stayed with you. He opened his heart to everyone, without judgment.
Known proudly as “The Man of the Hour,” Otis made an impact that reached far beyond his immediate family. To many, he wasn’t just Otis—he was Pops and Poppos. He was guidance, comfort, and steady love all in one.
He is reunited with his beloved wife, Loretta Phillips, whose memory remained close to him always. He leaves behind his mother, Nena Ziyad; his children, Renee, Otis Jr., Mario, Julay, Melissa, Tamara, and Brandon Phillips; and his cherished grandchildren, Damairia Phillips, Deshawn Rhodes, Delvon Hightower, Nieka Phillips, Marisa Johnson, Maleyna Polynice, Justin Phillips, Brielle Phillips, Arianna Phillips, Alyssa Phillips, Otis Jeat Phillips, Otra Phillips, Cazhmere Garcia, Darren Butler, Melia Smith, Zadie Taplin, Cayla Phillips, and Brandon Jr. Phillips, along with countless others whose lives he touched.
Poppos will truly be missed. But his laughter, his wisdom, and the way he showed up for people will never fade. His legacy lives on in every life he changed, every smile he created, and every heart he opened.
