Robert S Hoop

Robert S. Hoop (Bob) died on July 24, 2024, of metastatic pancreatic cancer at the age of 80. Robert was born in Indianapolis, Indiana along with his brother Al (Chip) Hoop to Helen Biehl Hoop Groves and Albert F. Hoop. Bob lived in Indianapolis for 27 years, Ann Arbor, MI for 17 years, Kansas City, MO and Leawood, KS for five years, and Sunnyvale, CA since 1992.

Hoop had a BA in political science with a minor in mathematics, an MA in political science both from Indiana Univ. Bloomington, and a second masters in biostatistics from the Univ. of Michigan Ann Arbor.

He taught high school and community college for 10 years, was chairman of the math department, then changed careers to pharmaceutical research in which he was a biostatistician, a medical writer, an expert in health-related quality of life, and an associate director of health economics. He ran his own successful one-person consulting business in pharmaceutical research for 10 years.

Hoop was married to Jacquiline Bottoms for 10 years, then divorced, after which they remained friends for life.

Hoop was active in local Sunnyvale neighborhood issues and community building efforts. He took part in an international mentoring program to support two Ukrainians during the current war with Russia. He also recently mentored a local high school student to support their pathway to college.

One of Robert’s legacies is the Robert S. Hoop Scholarship/Fellowship for political science students at Indiana University.

Hoop’s passions included curiosity, love of learning, trying to adapt to change, and enhancing inner peace.
