Tien Duc Nguyen, passed away peacefully on the morning of August 13, 2020 at his home in San Jose, CA after his battle with cancer at the age of 72. He succumbed to the effects of a failure to thrive brought on by his fight with large B cell gastric lymphoma and subsequent round of chemotherapy. Tien was quietly surrounded and comforted by family members, choosing to live his final days in the loving care of those who cared most for him.
Tien was born in Thai Binh Province, Vietnam in 1947. As a loving father and grandfather, and a fiercely independent, strong spirit, he loved making people laugh and continued to make jokes even up to the very end. Tien loved being around his large, extended family, spending time with friends, and karaoking. After fighting the Communists in Vietnam as a proud pilot of a C-119 for the Black Dragon Squadron of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF), he moved his family to the United States in 1975.
After living in California and New Mexico, Tien moved his family to Olympia, WA. There, he worked as an information systems analyst for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services for three decades. Upon his retirement, he moved to Seattle, WA and then to San Jose, CA to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
Tien is survived by his wife Maiphuong Mai, Viet Nguyen (son) and his partner Rachel Foote, Mai Groff (daughter) and her husband Josh Groff, as well as his two grandchildren Sullivan and Samson Groff.
Services will be held at Oak Hill Funeral Home at 300 Curtner Avenue, San Jose CA, 95125 on August 23, 2020 at 10:00 AM Pacific Time
