Born Otilia Flores Lopez on May 12, 1938, in Riverside, California, she was the beloved daughter of Candelario and Theodora F. Lopez. Tillie was the eleventh of twelve children and the youngest of the seven Lopez daughters. Her early years were spent in California’s agricultural communities, where her father worked tirelessly in the fruit and cotton fields. The Lopez family moved often—first in Riverside, then Visalia—before ultimately making their home in San Jose.
Tillie graduated from Willow Glen High School in 1957. Shortly after, she began what would become a dedicated 30-year career as a secretary with the Butchers’ Union Office Local 506, now known as the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.
Tillie was blessed with two children, Theodore (“Ted”) and Vivian, from her first marriage. In 2014, Tillie endured the heartbreaking loss of her daughter Vivian, who passed away after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer. Tillie’s love for her daughter remained steadfast, and she carried Vivian’s memory with her every day, holding close the joy, strength, and light Vivian brought into her life.
Later in life, Tillie met Richard Vanderwalker, who became the great love of her life. They shared more than three decades of marriage, filled with companionship, travel, and deep affection, until Richard’s passing in August 2022.
Family was at the heart of everything Tillie did. She cherished visits with her loved ones, greeting everyone with warm laughter, a joyful smile, and an open heart. She lived with gratitude, simplicity, and unwavering faith, offering thanks to God for the blessings of her life. Those who knew her will forever remember her kindness, gentle spirit, and the love she so freely gave.
Tillie is survived by her son Theodore, five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Her memory will continue to shine brightly in all who loved her.
A service honoring Tillie’s life will be held on December 3, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Funeral Home, Chapel of the Oaks, in San Jose, California.
