Việt was born in 1957 in Vàm Rằng, Việt Nam, to Đoàn Thành Phát and Phạm Thị Điếu. On November 10, 1977, after a long courtship, he married Phan Thị Mỹ Lệ. In 1984, he launched a successful vượt biên trip which helped 22 family members escape communist Việt Nam. Together, he and his wife raised five children, Nam, Hằng, Hạnh, Hiếu, and Trung.
Việt did not have a formal education. However, through hard work, he managed to become an accomplished contractor whose vast knowledge of building and construction earned him a respected reputation in his field. His gentle and kind demeanor meant that he was personable and made friends easily.
Việt was preceded in death by his father and mother, Đoàn Thành Phát and Phạm Thị Điếu; and his youngest sister, Đoàn Thu Em. He is survived by his wife, Mỹ Lệ Thị Phan; his sisters, Đoàn Thu Ba and Đoàn Thu Hà; his five children, Nam, Hằng, Hạnh, Hiếu, and Trung; and his five grandchildren, Adrianna, Adam, Rocco, Xander, and Serena.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at Oak Hill Funeral Home, Chapel of the Oaks, on 300 Curtner Ave, San Jose, CA, 92125 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
