Beverly Carr McCarthy Beverly Carr McCarthy was born on December 7, 1922, in San Francisco, California to Myrtle and Stanley Carr. She passed away on August 15th, 2010 in Marin County after a short illness. "Bev" was raised by a large extended family, including her grandparents, with whom she spent many summers at Emerald Lake in San Mateo County. Bev spoke fondly of these early days of her life. From the Dungeness crab she ate as a child on Fisherman's Wharf, to her dedicated reading as an adult of Herb Cain's column in the Chronicle, Bev fostered a devotion to San Francisco, its culture, sports teams, personalities, and daily happenings. Graduating from George Washington High School in San Francisco in 1940, Bev went on to attend Lone Mountain College for Women. She was unable to finish her college studies due to WWII but instead, went to work at Fort Mason, where she developed a group of lifelong friends with whom she periodically met for lunch. Bev became a war bride when she married Marty McCarthy in 1945. They moved to Marin County in 1953 and set about building a home in San Rafael where they would raise their children and live out the rest of their years. Bev and Marty's first child, Patricia (Boitano), born in 1949, would be joined by 5 siblings, the second of whom, Christine (Clifford), was born in 1952. Mark McCarthy, their first son, was born in 1954. In 1956, Michele (Brown) arrived into the family, as the third and youngest daughter. Then in 1957, Michael Peter was born. Sadly, at less than 1 year of age, Michael passed away. Their last child, Terrence was brought into their lives in August of 1963. Bev was appreciated by those close to her for her skills in bridge and tennis, two social activities where she nourished her many friendships. Even with her tennis playing days behind her, Bev continued, until very recently, to enjoy the many relationships that originated on the court. Continuing to hone her skills into late 2009, Bev found herself enjoying bridge with many of the original members of her Arrivederci, San Francisco, and Alma Via bridge groups. One of the great joys in Bev's life was the time she spent with her grandchildren. She would rarely miss an opportunity to participate in one of their events. From 4H to school plays to lacrosse games to graduations, Gigi, as her grandchildren referred to her, could be found in the crowd, always with a proud smile. Bev's husband Marty preceded her in death in 1998. She leaves behind her 5 children and their spouses, Mark Boitano and Steve Brown, and her 8 grandchildren, Dominic and Brian Boitano, Carlie, Kelley and Courtney Brown, Kevin and Brendan Clifford, and Connor McCarthy. She is also survived by her younger sister, Carolyn Di Santo of San Mateo, her sister-in-law, Mary McCarthy, and many nieces and nephews. Bev will be remembered as an endearing, gracious and loving woman who lived for and was completely engaged with her daughters, sons and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her great ability to always connect with people and make everyone feel special. A Celebration of Life and Mass will be held on Sunday, August 29th, 2010 at 11:00 AM at The Dominican Sisters' Center located at 1520 Grand Ave, San Rafael, California, 94901. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Dominican Sisters, whom Bev held close to her heart, at the above address.
