Daniel James Shannon of San Rafael passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 7 with his children by his side. Dan was a fourth generation San Franciscan, born in 1928 to Walter and Winifred Shannon. Dan graduated from Stanford University after serving in the United States Army and briefly attended Boalt Law School. In 1955, he married the love of his life Anna Marcuson and they settled in San Rafael to raise their 3 children. Dan and Anna were inseparable for almost 60 years until her recent death in July, 2014. Dan worked in Sales in the Printing and Paper industry and served as an officer in the Air Force Reserve, but his life revolved around his family. Dan was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will always be remembered for his humor, his generosity, his love of learning and his Catholic faith. He was “Tapa” to his beloved grandchildren and he cherished the time he shared with them. He enjoyed participating in their school, church and athletic events on both coasts. Dan also enjoyed the more simple things in life: a walk in the woods, reading a good book, or watching a ballgame on TV. Dan is survived by his children Karen Shannon (Thomas Ryder) of Carlsbad, CA, Julie Shannon (Ken Andrasko) of Bethesda, MD, and Mark Shannon of San Rafael, and his grandchildren Rebecca and Natalie Andrasko, and Brendan and Caitlin Ryder. He was preceded in death by his wife Anna and his brother Walter. A Mass of Christian Burial is planned at St Raphael’s Mission San Rafael Archangel for Friday, January 30 at 10:00 AM. A private burial service will follow. Keaton's Mortuary is entrusted with arrangements.
