December 17, 1924 – October 28, 2013
Don Kreps died peacefully in his home in Greenbrae this morning after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eileen; his four children and their spouses and nine grandchildren: Daniel Kreps and Nancy Starr and their children Emily and Anne; David and Marty Kreps and their children Sara and Katherine; Brien and Carolyn Kreps and their children Justin and Evan; Monica Kreps Sevy and Paul Sevy and their children Kyle, Ross and Devlin and his sister Theodora Kreps of Novato.
Mr. Kreps and his family moved to Marin in 1957 when he became the founding Principal of Redwood High School. He was recognized in 2009 by induction into Redwood’s distinguished alumni “Avenue of the Giants,” the only non-alumnus to be so honored. He was credited with “creating the spirit and high expectations for students and staff alike. His qualities of mentorship, high ethical standards and kindness permeated Redwood during his tenure. He allowed staff and students to challenge themselves in creating a positive educational atmosphere.”
He stepped down as Principal in 1979 to return to the classroom teaching mathematics and physics at Redwood until 1983 and then at The Branson School for an additional nine years. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Arts from Stanford. However, he and Eileen met in Berkeley while he was serving in the United States Navy V-12 program. They were married in 1946 shortly after he returned from Pacific at the end of WWII.
There will be a funeral Mass at St. Sebastian’s in Greenbrae at 11:00AM on Monday, November 4th. The family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Organization: Team Redwood Giants for Don Kreps or to Hospice by the Bay.
