Died on May 18, 2022, in San Rafael, California.
Herb emigrated from Germany to the United States after World War II, served in the United States Air Force from 1952 -1956, and was stationed in Washington, Mississippi, Greenland and California. After honorable discharge from service at Hamilton Air Force Base (Novato, CA), Herb moved to San Francisco and married Antoinette “Toni” Bezdek on June 4, 1958. He graduated from Golden Gate University School of Management in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration.
Herb worked for the California State Personnel Board then Great Western Financial Corporation in Sacramento, Oakland, Beverly Hills, San Jose, and Novato, before moving to Santa Rosa in 1970.
He joined the Marin County Office of Education in July 1974 as Director of Personnel, and continued providing support post retirement to the office. Herb stayed on through 2007, serving his community for over 33 years.
At MCOE, Herb was known as a humble, soft-spoken professional with a wonderful smile. He was truly kind, with a quiet and decisive manner. Herb welcomed every new employee to the team and was the glue that tied the organization together ensuring that all classrooms and departments had appropriate staff and that students were properly supported throughout their school day. Herb also handled the rare tough situations when a staff person wasn’t doing well on the job. In these cases, he was firm and fair but also handled everyone with kindness and compassion.
Herb was also a most loving and devoted father, grandfather and teacher to his only child Kristina "Tina" Warren and his two grandsons Tyler and Sam. A staunch believer in public education, he was so proud of them both graduating from Redwood High School and the Reed Union School District. Herb also loved and appreciated son-in-law Jordan Warren for his devotion to Tina and their sons, photographing all the many school theatre productions, baseball and football games when he and Toni were not in the stands.
Herb is also survived by his nephews and niece in Germany. A dog lover from childhood, Herb will also be missed by Tina’s Golden Retriever Buster - “the other old man”.
Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa, the caregiving team at Comforting Hands Forever San Rafael and the nurses and staff of Hospice By the Bay who cared for Herb so lovingly and well in his last days here with us.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to SchoolsRule at https://schoolsrule.org/
