

Helena was born and raised in Luzna, Poland. During this time she witnessed first-hand the invasion of Poland and World War II. A woman of will and perseverance, no matter the situation, she always made do with what was at hand.
After immigrating to America she and her husband set roots in Westport, Connecticut where they raised five children. Helena lived in Westport for 45 years and relocated to Sandwich, Massachusetts shortly after the death of her beloved husband, Walter Jon Mandel. A fiercely devout woman, she was humble, loving, kind and selfless. Her generosity and spirit of charity was particularly evident with her family, whom were her greatest joy. Helena was an incredibly hard worker, continuing her caregiving long into her retirement.
Helena will be sorely missed by her family, including her children, Theodore Mandel and his wife Sue of West Barnstable, MA, Helen Canepari and her husband Michael of Plymouth, MA, Teresa Miller and her husband Brian of Bow, NH, Christina Pagliano and her husband John of Milford, CT and Mary Mandel and her late husband Gaetano Vitti of Milford, CT, her 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in her death by her parents, her infant son Stanislaw, her brother Marion and sister Anna, as well as her nieces and nephews.
A visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, November 2nd, from 8:00am - 9:30am in the Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home locates at 154 Route 6A in Sandwich, MA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held following visitation at 10:00am in the Corpus Christi Church located at 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Road also in Sandwich.
Interment will immediately follow Mass at the Assumption Cemetery in Westport, CT.
In lieu of flowers Helena would very much appreciate donations be made to KANCELARIA KUSTOSZA JASNEJ GORY which is a Catholic seminary in Poland she held dear to her heart.
