Joseph Francis Nelson, of East Sandwich and South Boston, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2026, surrounded by his heartbroken family. He was the beloved husband of Virginia (Gillen) Nelson, with whom he shared more than 59 years of marriage.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Joe was the son of the late Francis and Frances (Princiotta) Nelson. He grew up in South Boston alongside his siblings, Janice Santosuosso (Ralph) of Quincy and William Nelson (Patricia) of Quincy, and was predeceased by his brother, Robert Nelson of Quincy.
Joe carried the pride and resilience of his South Boston roots throughout his life. As a young man, Joe proudly served his country in the United States Navy before returning home to begin what would become a lifelong career with the Boston Edison Company. Over the years, he held a variety of positions and ultimately retired from the Plymouth Nuclear Power Plant. His herculean work ethic and unyielding commitment to his family defined both his professional and personal life.
Joe understood and respected the power of education and worked tirelessly to ensure his children were given every opportunity to succeed. In addition to his wife, Ginny, he is survived by his five children: Joseph Nelson and his wife Merry of New Orleans, LA, Jeanne Nelson and her husband Juan of East Sandwich, MA, Christopher Nelson and his wife Andrea of Reading, MA, Suzanne Caleshu and her husband Peter of East Sandwich, MA, and Brian Nelson and his wife Jenna of Duxbury, MA.
Joe successfully hard-wired each one of his children with many of his own trademark qualities: persistence, humor, discipline, and grit. He was also the proud grandfather of eleven grandchildren (Shawna Nelson, Cora Palomar-Nelson, Alexander Palomar-Nelson, Jack Nelson, Emma Nelson, Riley Caleshu, Andrew Caleshu, Luke Caleshu, Peter Caleshu III, Brody Nelson, MacKenzie Nelson) and one great-granddaughter, Sylvia Boden all of whom brought him immense joy. Joe is also survived by several nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
In retirement, Joe and Ginny settled permanently in Scorton Shores in East Sandwich, a place that had long been the beating heart of countless Nelson summers since they first purchased their cottage in 1978. Cape Cod became Joe’s sanctuary. Although he famously claimed to hate the beach, he loved the ocean. His favorite place in the world was sitting on the front porch in his rocking chair, breathing in the salty air with an ice-cold can of Schaefer in hand and a sleeping dog at his feet.
Joe will be remembered for his quick Irish wit, his legendary sense of humor, his fierce loyalty, and his limitless generosity. He had a remarkable ability to bring laughter to any situation and could lighten even the darkest day with a perfectly timed joke. A natural storyteller, Joe delighted in keeping those around him smiling. Beneath the humor was a man of sincere kindness and unwavering dedication to the people he loved. If you knew Joe, you knew he would do anything for you without hesitation.
Above all else, Joe was a profoundly devoted husband, father, son and brother. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and in the way he lived his life. He leaves those who loved him with a lasting reminder to not take life too seriously, find the humor in everyday moments, and share it freely and generously with those they love, just as Joe always did.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at Corpus Christi Parish 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Road East Sandwich, MA. Burial is private.
