On July 24th at 1 PM, the family and friends of Len Ogren will gather at Camp Calumet in Freedom NH where his cremains will be placed at the Memorial Chapel on Jackman Ridge. He died of heart failure in the late afternoon on July 6th at a rehabilitation center in Sandwich, MA shortly after enjoying a visit with his wife Carole. He was 79.
Len was the only child of Swedish immigrants, Knute and Ulla (Dagh) Ogren, and grew up in Somerville, Massachusetts. He spent a significant amount of time in his earliest years in Sandwich on Cape Cod. Together, the small family of three built their summer home in Town Neck where, eventually, Len would spend his final days. In the early 1960s, Len met Carole (Nyberg), his wife of nearly 55 years, through Luther League, an organization that brought young people of the Lutheran Church together. They had three kids — Karl, Karin, and Knute — and created a good life in their home in Medford, MA. The house was always filled with love, with hope, and with enough. In his best years, able and connected, Len had a heart for learning, for animals & kids, for singing tunes, for laughing with friends, for engaging a stranger in conversation, for putting to use a little Swedish ingenuity (thriftiness) to fix a problem, and for spending hours on figuring something out. There was a time over a period of decades when the freezer was always stocked with his delicious chicken soup. Len gets kudos and then some for his commitment to 39 years, two months, and 21 days of sobriety. Thanks Bill W. In his day, Len’s penmanship was excellent, his tie was perfectly tied, and everything in his brief case was precisely set. His attention to detail served him well in his later years when doctors’ visits and numerous medications required astonishing care. In the closing chapters of his life, Len’s journey wasn’t the easiest due to any number of medical issues, but he persevered in the way that he was able to persevere.
Carole, Karl & Jen, Karin & Pete, Knute & Colin, Madi, Jackson, and Spencer are grateful for the kind support from friends and family from all over. We know that the miles are long, a pandemic is still of concern, and people have all kinds of things going on during this busy summer. The family will welcome folks for a time of remembering at Calumet on July 24th. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so can make a memorial gift to Calumet, P.O. Box 236, W. Ossipee, NH 03890.
