Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on May 24, 1947, Art (as friends and family called him) studied History and Chemistry at Augusta College. He served six years in the Army Reserves and attained the rank of Specialist 4th Class before continuing on to receive his Juris Doctorate from Georgia State University. He worked as a lawyer for many years, including in the Department of Health and Human Services, Georgia Pacific, and his own practice before retiring in 2012.
Art was devoted to his wife of 45 years, Suzanne, his sons Arthur IV (Allyss), Matthew (Amanda), Nathaniel, and Patrick (Sabre), and his two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary Hester and is survived by his sister Helen and brothers Charlie (Louanna) and Harry (Wendy).
He spent years as a leader with Scouting America - wrangling boys through camping trips, sailing adventures, merit badge courses, and entertaining them with countless stories. He would often say of storytelling that “the truth is a good starting point.” When his boys were young, he read to them nightly from a vast collection of books by J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Forester, Charles Dickens, and many more.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Democratic National Committee.
A visitation and light reception will take place on November 9, 2025 at H.M. Patterson Arlington Chapel in Sandy Springs at 11:30 a.m. with funeral service at 1 p.m. and interment at Arlington Memorial Park to follow.
